KDRT Summer 2020 Update: Whether from Home Remotely or Live from Our Studio, Many Weekly Shows Are Back!

Mon, 07/27/2020 - 6:24pm | Diane Crumley

KDRT-fb-cover-banner-on-air (2).jpg

Starting mid-July, we’ve been able to bring back a number of KDRT programmers into the studio. This is accomplished with widely staggered air shifts and rigorous cleaning protocol. All shows can be heard live on KDRT 95.7 FM, and also streamed live at https://kdrt.org, where you can also find a schedule, program highlights, DJ contact info, or listen or download archived programs.

Here are some highlights:

• Sara TAPS is back with “The Awesome Patrol Show” Wednesdays 1-2 pm, highlighting the best of indie label music.

• “At Night I Fly” is an eight-part series with incarcerated poet Spoon Jackson about his life and poetry. In this series, Jackson dives into the complicated nature of being locked up and yet still growing. Producer Matthew Schneeman then dives into the same themes but on the outside -- connecting the two worlds. Jackson is in Solano State Prison. Show airs Sundays at noon.

COVID-19 Community Report Episode 29: A Talk with Joe DiNunzio - Updates from Davis School Board to Chamber of Commerce - Jul 21st, 2020

Tue, 07/21/2020 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-Joe-DiNunzio-guest (2).jpg

Today's guest is Joe DiNunzio, who wears many hats. For this interview, we speak about the impacts of COVID-19 on two organizations where he has a leadership role: the Davis Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees, and the Davis Chamber of Commerce. The DJUSD Board of Education meets this Thursday, July 23 at 11:30 a.m. for a special meeting in which they'll hear more about the plan for opening schools online beginning Aug. 26. We talk about the recent school board appointment, the concerns about equity and accessibility for different types of learners, and how district staff, teachers, and families have been communicating and working through this difficult time. As a reminder, DJUSD board meetings are recorded and aired through a partnership between City Media Services and Davis Media Access, and can be watched live on Channel 17 on the Comcast system in Davis, or streamed at DJUSD.net, where they are also archived.

Davisville, July 20, 2020: Contested memorials

Mon, 07/20/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Gandhi statue Davis CA July 2020.jpg

Many public statues are being defaced, toppled or removed this summer, and names taken off buildings, as more of America comes to terms with the ingrained racism in the United States that oppresses African-Americans. Statues of Confederate war heroes or slaveholders are particular targets. But this fight over symbols is not new, nor is it external to Davis; this city has had conflicts over symbols like the statue to Gandhi in Central Park (pictured), and over naming a street for Edward Teller, co-inventor of the hydrogen bomb.

Melissa M. Bender, a senior lecturer at UC Davis, co-edited “Contested Commemoration in U.S. History  / Diverging Public Interpretations,” a textbook with 11 essays on topics that go far beyond statues. They vary from movies with an antebellum theme made during Barack Obama’s presidency, to the homes destroyed to create Shenandoah National Park, to the depiction of female U.S. veterans of the Vietnam War, and the fate of a house in Chicago where members of the Black Panthers were killed during gunfire with police in 1969. The subjects today include how to decide what to keep, and why.

Jacob Swedlow Talks Jazz (and more) on Listening Lyrics. Aired Friday July 17, 2020

Thu, 07/16/2020 - 12:22pm | Pieter Pastoor

Swedlow, J.jpeg

Jacob Swedlow is a talented and beautiful human being. In a far-ranging interview he shares with us his music, and how Covid-19 and the Black Lives Matter storm affected him -- all of it influencing his own being and his creativity.

The best I can do is let Jacob talk a little about himself:

"My name is Jacob Swedlow, and I am a drummer, composer, vibraphonist, and teacher from Sacramento. After being exposed to Black American music at a young age, I have developed a deep passion for the history, culture, and innovation of the music, as well as the urge to play it! After my first few professional performances, I realized that this was the path for me.

Casey Van Beek and the Tulsa Groove Highlighted on KDRT's Silver Nine Volt Heart - July 9, 2020

Thu, 07/09/2020 - 12:07pm | Diane Crumley

KDRT-fb-Casey-Van-Beek-and-Tulsa-Groove-album-2020 (2).jpg

Casey Van Beek and the Tulsa Groove are veteran musicians whose individual histories include stints with legends like Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, and more. Known for their sultry, laid-back "Tulsa Sound," their new album "Heaven Forever" (released in April) adds their own flavorings, yet is reminiscent of forerunners Leon Russell, JJ Cale and Elvin Bishop. This album, produced by band member Walt Richmond, is sponsored by Little Village Foundation, a nonprofit that seeks out music happening in communities that's created by artists with non-traditional backgrounds, but who often have deep experience as performers. Little Village records and produces a CD album at no charge as a gift to the musicians, and to support community-based artists.

On July 8, Casey Van Beek and the Tulsa Groove appeared on Working from Home, a streaming series produced by Little Village as another means of sharing these traditional roots-style performances while musicians cannot play in their typical venues. Link to it on their website or via Facebook.
