Davisville, Jan. 30, 2017: Bad Storms, Mostly Friendly Folks, 6,000 Calories a Day, and Other Tales From Biking 66 While 66

Mon, 01/30/2017 - 6:45pm | Bill Buchanan

DougW in Chicago.jpg

In 2005 Doug Waterman, a retired teacher who lives in Davis, rode his bike solo from Santa Monica to Chicago on Route 66. He also was 66 at the time. A decade later, he has written a book about the trip—“It Only Hurts When I Sit Down: A Bicycle Adventure on Historic Route 66”—and he appears on Davisville today to talk about what he saw along the way. He is joined by his wife Donna, who wrote nightly emails for their friends and family. His recollections include tales of good deeds and usually friendly folks, ghost towns, storms he barely outran, odd moments, and a truck tire he saw explode on the road.

Tarek Isham visits Listening Lyrics Friday 1/27/17 4PM PST

Thu, 01/26/2017 - 7:57am | Pieter Pastoor

Tarek Isham visits KDRT

Tarek Isham found his musical voice while living in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, where music and creativity make daily and deep impressions. Four years ago, he moved back to Clyde Park, Montana to help his mother with her Quarter Horse Ranch and to pursue an education in veterinary medicine, which subsequently brought him to Davis, California. Before moving, he played many nights and weekends in the Bozeman area in a duo called Cottonwood Line. Tarek plays guitar, harmonica, foot-pedal drums and sings songs–both original and old–in country, blues, gospel and folk styles. Look to catch one of his feel-like-dancing live shows and an upcoming demo album under the name Doc Tari, which was the name of a famous Quarter Horse.

For those outside the listening area this show will stream live at www.kdrt.org

Divine Intervention Strikes - Jan 23

Mon, 01/23/2017 - 5:04pm | Jess Goddésse

Jimmy Davis cover art

Divine Intervention is about to strike the KDRT airwaves. This week, we'll dive again into the January 2017 releases...we'll rock a little, dance a little, love a little, laugh a little... Well, maybe we'll laugh (or cry) a lot over this week's "Vinyl Vespers" feature. Or, then again, maybe it's an amazing and rare find that we can enjoy together, acknowledging that we can't always judge a record by its cover.

Listen now.  UC Davis Music Department ( http://arts.ucdavis.edu/music ) loaned KDRT 3 of their ambassadors to talk music and listen to some music. Sam Griffith (Director of Jazz Ensembles), Christopher Castro (Doctoral Canadate) and Marti Sarigul-Klijn . We talked about their love of music, the UC Davis Music Dept. and so much more. Really our conversation was like a jazz performance - taking us to where our minds flowed. The UC DAVIS school of music does offer many concerts in a variety of genres. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "Skeleton" Tree on Album of the Week - Jan 19

Thu, 01/19/2017 - 4:17pm | Dug Deep

nickcave-Jan 192017.jpg

Nick Cave image

Skeleton Tree is a somber LP, even for Nick Cave.  Its's very atmospheric, with songs that defy the usual verse-chorus-verse of most pop tunes in much the same way as his last release, Push Away the Sky. The lyrics were written by Cave and the music by Cave and Bad Seed Warren Ellis, his chief collaborator since the mid 1990s. While the songs are dark and often sad, reportedly they were written before Cave’s son Arthur passed away unexpectedly in July 2015. The album was released in September 2016 in conjunction with the film One More Time with Feeling, which Cave used as a promotional vehicle rather than doing interviews. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds just stepped off on a world tour last week and will be appearing in Nor Cal on June 24.
