KDRT 95.7 FM is grassroots radio from Davis, CA, airing an eclectic mix of music and public-affairs programming. A project of nonprofit Davis Media Access, KDRT streams worldwide via KDRT.org.

In the Key of Folk with Karen Leyse offers music that will keep you humming or dancing along — perhaps both! The focus is on traditional and current folk music, Americana, and bluegrass, with Celtic, Nordic, and Spanish infusions — wherever Karen's travels and interests take her. In addition, the music of contra dance, an American Folk tradition that came with English and other settlers, will often be threaded through the hour. Don’t know it? Check it out.

The program has won 17 Excellence in Journalism awards from the San Francisco Press Club since 2018, including first place in radio/podcast public affairs programs for 2025, plus a national Hometown Media Award for excellence from the Alliance for Community Media in 2024. The Wild Fox Party

Tune in for a wide variety of roots music — including doo-wop, gospel, jazz, blues, rock 'n' roll, Latin, African, and hillbilly/country bluegrass — from the early 1920s to contemporary times. The Wild Fox Party focuses on vocal groups , small-group ensembles, and outstanding vocalists and instrumentalists who never or hardly ever get heard. The music provides a forum for learning about history and diverse cultures, and it does so through the exposure of music as art, highlighting points in time that will last forever via the medium of audio recordings.

Musician Gene Parsons, who will perform in Davis with the rest of the Mendocino Quartet on Oct. 13, returns to Davisville this week for a discussion that largely has two parts: the quartet, and a few memories about the first LP he recorded with the Byrds -- Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde.

Dr. Byrds followed the popular band's late 1968 country-rock breakthrough record, Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Dr. Byrds is not among Parsons’ favorite Byrds records – he prefers Untitled and Ballad of Easy Rider – but he agrees that the playing of Clarence White is one of the attractions of Dr. Byrds. White, a widely admired guitarist, died in 1973 at age 29 after he was struck by a drunk driver. “You hear a lot of Clarence in there [on Dr. Byrds],” Parsons says, “figuring out how he’s going to work with this band.”

Listen now to Doc Tari as a one-man band, formed under the influence of New Orleans busking acts. Driving out feel-good rhythms on foot pedal drums, guitar and harmonica, Doc Tari sings songs that trace the roots of American music back through the annals of country, blues, gospel and folk music. His set includes new arrangements of both rare and well-known gems of American music as well as original songs, drawing on experiences gained while living across the country, from New Orleans to Montana and, now, veterinary school in Davis, California.

Reverend Michelle Haunold, aka DJ Mikki Riff and president of Gearhead Records joins Dug Deep for a special edition of the Electric Compost Heap honoring Gearhead Records' history and music, live in the KDRT studio Wednesday, September 26th, at 7:00 p.m. Gearhead records began releasing punk rock records in 2000, and their catalog includes releases by the Hives, the New Bomb Turks, the Riverboat Gamblers, and many more. This year’s Gearfest Event – a fundraiser for the SPCA featuring the Woolly Bandits, Control Freaks, Infamous Swanks, and others – takes place Saturday, September 29th, at the Blue Lamp in Sacramento starting at 12 noon. Andrew Castro has been a full time professional musician in Sacramento for about 4 years now. Over the summer he took a break from writing and performing music to sit down and write his first book and most important project of his life. It's called Overcoming Your Anxiety for People on the Go. The title comes from not managing your anxiety but overcoming it. The book is short and concise, only a little over 100 pages. In our fast moving world he wanted to make something compact and easy to reference.

It was just released on Monday the 17th and since then has hit #1 for New Releases in the short self-help category on Amazon. It also was #9 in Kindle version and #10 in paperback version in the major category Anxieties and Phobias.

Today's program rebroadcasts an interview from January 2013 with Joel Davis, a hometown Davis journalist whose book “Justice Waits: The UC Davis Sweetheart Murders” played a key role in solving the 1980 Davis kidnapping and murder of UC Davis students John Riggins and Sabrina Gonsalves. A Sacramento Superior Court jury convicted Richard Hirschfield of the crime in 2012, nearly a third of a century after the murders.
