OUR PROGRAMS

Roots, Shoots and Leaves

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. And if you listen long enough, you may experience some musical enlightenment.

Live Tuesday 6-8pm
Replays Saturday 5-7pm

Twang Thang

Twang-Thang-farmstead-image-Yolo

Twang Thang features outlaw country old and new, showcasing the folks who sowed the harder-edged musical seeds for what we today call Americana, as well as the newer artists who continue the tunes and outlaw ethos forward. George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Lucinda Willimans, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakum, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billie Jo Shaver ... Americana music didn't just show up one day — it has deep and varied country music roots. Twang Thang explores the originators, the newcomers, and the music that happened along the way!

Live Wednesday 7-9am
Replays Saturday 1-3pm

That's Life

Lois Richter’s format for That’s Life is mostly interviews. Recurring topics include Davis activities and groups; work and life choices; philosophy and theory; plus birding, cooking, art, and other passions. Lois occasionally breaks into music — from ballads to the slack key sounds of Hawaii to golden oldies rock 'n' roll — but mostly there is just talk.

To suggest a topic for discussion or a person to interview, text Lois or leave a message in the comments here.

Live Tuesday 12-1pm

Davisville, Feb. 25, 2019: Yolo County wants to know your priorities

Wed, 02/27/2019 - 5:43am | Bill Buchanan

Old Yolo map, showing Davis.png

You probably don’t spend much time thinking about the government of Yolo County. Even so, the county does things we need them to do—in areas like public health, the environment, the jail and roads—and decides policies that govern the area. So, the work matters. This spring the county is working on its plan to guide the next few years, and they want your ideas and suggestions on what should be in that plan. Today’s guest, county Supervisor Don Saylor, talks about the information they’d like to get, and how they’ll use it.

Davisville, Feb. 11, 2019: Standup comedy in Davis with Ean and Erick

Mon, 02/11/2019 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Ean Kimura and Erick Fierro Feb 2019.jpg

Ean Kimura & Erick Fierro, both second-year students at UC Davis, are part of the standup comedy scene in Davis. It’s not a big scene—Yelp’s list of 10 top comedy clubs in Davis stops at nine entries, and lists just one location that's actually in town—but we learn more about it on today’s show. We also talk about why Fierro and Kimura enjoy making people laugh, the UC Davis standup comedy club (possibly the same one Hasan Minhaj started), what makes good standup comedy, what happens when you bomb onstage, and more, including the t-shirt cannon bit they presented on the first edition of their KDVS campus radio station show In the Meantime (8 a.m. Mondays).

The Gold Souls live in the studio, recorded Feb 8th, 2019

Fri, 02/08/2019 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

gold souls.jpeg

Vocalist Juniper Waller, percusionist Billy D. Thompson and bass player Jace Dorn of The Gold Souls were in the studio. The Gold Souls bring the driving grooves of funk, the rich textures of soul, and the compelling storytelling of the blues to the Northern California scene. With the dynamic Juniper Waller at the helm, the band combines their many influences to create a unique sound that rings true to the idioms that inspire them. Their recent efforts include the release and tour of their self-recorded and produced, eponymous EP in May of 2017. This release, while remaining an honest representation, is only the beginning of the band’s creative journey. A new single is scheduled for release Febuary 12, 2019.
