Listening Lyrics

Listening Lyrics, Kurt.org, community radio

Welcome to an hour of Listening Lyrics, right here on KDRT 95.7 FM in Davis, California.

No musical passports required. Folk can sit next to funk, jazz can dance with rock, and a singer-songwriter might end up sharing a park bench with a reggae band. Listening Lyrics is your invitation to escape the noise of the day and enter a world of elaborate sounds, unexpected discoveries, and songs that have something to say.

This is the kind of journey only commercial-free community radio can provide.

So close your eyes. Open your ears. Relax your mind. Join me, Pieter Pastoor, as we send color to your ears and wander through the vast landscape of music and lyrics—the grand meeting place of rhythm, imagination, and the remarkable human ability to create art. Whether it's a whisper, a roar, a groove, or a melody you've never heard before, it all belongs here.

Remember: Real Music. Real Community. Real Good Music.

Encaustic = art made from hot pots of color!

Mon, 09/04/2017 - 1:59pm | Lois Richter

KDRT~encaustic~InSet(2017-09-07)-sm.jpg

Adele Louise Shaw is an encaustic artist and teacher in Davis. Her work is known world-wide, and her art classes have been drawing enthusiastic students for years. Listen on Thursday at 1:00 pm (7 Sept 2017) or Friday at 3:00 pm (8 Sept 2017) to hear about this fascinating art form. Newly revived in the west, it's origins are over 2000 years old!

What is encaustic? -- the substance, the process, and the finished work all share the same word. Should a piece of encaustic art be flat and painterly or 3-D and sculptural? Should it have bold splashes of color or subtle transparent layers? Since one can include other materials into encaustic, should the art piece then be called "encaustic", "mixed media", or "collage"? Adele will tell us YES! Encaustic art allows freedom of expression on many levels; we are not limited to the 'shoulds' that abound elsewhere.

We will find out the nitty gritty of what materials to use in encaustic art (and why) and also about the care and feeding of an encaustic piece you own. No phone calls today, but Lois has lots of questions stored up -- so this will definitely be a hot episode!

Live Tracks Airs 60s - Early 70s Long Form Jams Including Jefferson Airplane, Savoy Brown, and Barry "The Fish" Melton

Thu, 08/31/2017 - 9:05pm | Jim Buchanan

As part of the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, the concert commitee at the Davis Odd Fellows Hall has organized a special "Thursday Live!" concert for Sept. 7th from 7-10pm with an all-star line-up of local musicians collaborating on the iconic songs of that special era.  Tributes will include the music of Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, It's A Beautiful Day, Youngbloods, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Byrds, Neil Young, and Country Joe and The Fish, to name a few. In preparation for this upcoming community concert, Jim has pulled out the vinyl for some long jam tracks from the likes of Jefferson Airplane, Savoy Brown, and a special local live performance from Barry Melton and friends recorded at a 2011 KDRT benefit concert at the Davis Odd Fellows Hall. For additional sixties-era "flavor", Jim includes some anti-war ditties from satirist and songwriter Tom Lehrer.

Davisville, Aug. 28, 2017: We Need A Lot More Housing, California YIMBY Says, So Start Building

Mon, 08/28/2017 - 7:05pm | Bill Buchanan

Davis housing 082715 1 (1).jpg

Housing is expensive and scarce, in Davis and in regions all over California. Clearly, the supply has not kept up with the growth in population. Brian Hanlon is executive director of California YIMBY (for “Yes In My Backyard”), a new group, largely backed by technologists, that is urging the state to get serious about building more houses and apartments. Lots of them. Wherever they're needed. It supports several proposed laws now before the state Legislature, including one that would reduce barriers to new housing in communities that don’t take their state-defined share of growth. On today’s Davisville, we talk about remedies he supports and how they’d play out here.

Sound in the Round cover art

Divine Intervention strikes this evening, 7-9 pm PT on KDRT. It's a hot, hot, HOT evening here in Davis, CA, and so we'll play nothing but the coolest of tunes, new and old, rock and beyond. So what does that mean, specifically? Nothing. Literally nothing. Like we said. It's hot. It's too hot to think, in fact. But we'll have fun. You'll see.

Divine Intervention Strikes - Aug 21

Mon, 08/21/2017 - 6:17pm | Jess Goddésse

Will Powers cover art

This week's edition of Divine Intervention strikes with a slate of new rock/pop from the likes of Algiers, Cage the Elephant, Red Baraat, and Teenage Bottlerocket, as well as some loveliness en Español from Lila Downs. There will be other genres. There will be an obligatory eclipse-related song. And there will be Vinyl Vespers as pictured—a recording made to be funny that may have decidedly missed the mark. Guess we'll see (or hear) this evening, 7-9p PT, only on KDRT. More info and replays here on the program page.

Album of the Week: Häxan by Dungen (8/16 at 5PM)

Mon, 08/14/2017 - 8:59pm | Eunah

Dungen-Haxan

When the album Häxan came out last November I was stoked. Not just because it was yet another Dungen album, but also because it was such a good one! It's their only all-instrumental album, which made it feel that much more special ~ finally it truly was all about the music itself! This album is Dungen's imagined score for the gorgeous 1926 Lotte Reiniger's animated film "The Adventures of Prince Achmed."
