The Joy of Living is a new 2-CD tribute album celebrating the centenary of Ewan MacColl's birth. MacColl – born Jimmy Miller in Salford, England – was an actor, playwright, social activist, musician, and controversial figure at the heart of the British folk revival in the 1950s and 60s. Joy of Living – produced by his sons Neill and Calum – celebrates MacColl the songwriter. Although best known for the love song “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” as recorded by Roberta Flack, MacColl also wrote many songs about the less-heralded members of British society: fishermen, miners, and travelling people. There are excellent tracks contributed by U.K. folk stalwarts and MacColl contemporaries including Dick Gaughan, Martin Carthy, Paul Brady, and Norma Waterson. For those in the U.S., this album also serves as introduction to luminaries of the contemporary British folk scene – Eliza Carthy, Seth Lakeman, Karine Polwart, and The Unthanks. Pray For Rain

Pray for Rain is indie dream-pop group Pure Bathing Culture's second LP, following their 2013 debut album, Moon Tides. Pray for Rain is full of danceable beats and shimmering, rythymic guitars, which--combined with lead singer Sarah Versprille's dreamy and lofty vocals--creates a trancelike, even hypnotic sonic atmosphere. The album sounds consistently upbeat and rarely ventures far from its dream-pop structure, but its lyrics on tracks like "The Tower" and "Darling, Save Us" are thematically hefty, contemplating mortality and the fleeting nature of life. Other standout songs include title track "Pray for Rain," probably the most energetic track sung nearly entirely with rhetorical questions, and the thoughtful and laid back "In the Night, In the Peaceful Night," an excellent ending to a fine album. Pray for Rain is perfect for dream-pop fans--it's an enjoyable, relaxing, blissful album that will help you unwind from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This week's featured album is I Often Dream of Trains by British singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock. Robyn started out in the 1970s with the Soft Boys before going solo in the early 1980s. He's known for quirky, haunting poetic lyrics that in early days drew comparisons to the style of Syd Barrett.

I Often Dream of Trains is his third solo album, released in 1984. It's an all acoustic effort, with Robyn's lyrics and vocals at the front, backing himself on electric and acoustic guitars and piano.

Today, Robyn remains an active recording and touring artist, with no less than 20 studio albums under his belt. His most recent release, The Man Upstairs, came out in 2014. Check out the man and his music at robynhitchcock.com.

Davis resident Dave Nachmanoff is an award-winning singer-songwriter and renowned guitarist. He tours nationally and internationally as a solo act, as well as valued accompanist to Al Stewart. Over the many years he has resided in Davis, Dave has been a generous supporter of this community. In a rare local appearance, Dave will do a benefit concert on December 12th for Yolo Food Truck, which is raising the funds to purchase a new refrigerated truck. Dave will join the Folk Brothers live in the KDRT studio between 10 and 11 AM on Wednesday, Dec. 9th. He’ll bring his guitar, play some songs, talk about his storied musical career, and tell us why we heard him singing in Starbucks across North America last month. Please join us!

(link is external) is a Sacramento based singer songwriter. His new EP "RED HEARTS" is now riding on the EP chart of iTunes. Andrew has been on the show before but now as an up and coming "star" we will talk about his new release. Andrew will be joined by singer/songwriter and producer Casey Groat. Andrew's acoustic upbeat pop styled music is catchy and melodic while providing lyrics that are thoughtful and personal and can relate to anyone who has been in love and out of love in any type of relationship. His live shows are high energy and though he is a solo performer his live looping and the rhythms and sounds created on his guitar provide a sound, power and energy most songwriters don't have.

Heard of the Davis Angels Network, or Silicon Valley Bank? The former is working to build a local culture that supports and invests in start-up companies in Davis, and the latter was founded in 1982 to become a major source of funding for emerging tech companies in the Silicon Valley (and grew into an international bank). On today’s Davisville, Lonnie Bookbinder of the Davis Angels, and retired SV Bank chairman Bob Medearis, who both live in Davis, talk about the real efforts to place more start-up ventures in town. There’s more going on in this area in Davis than you might know about.
