Davisville, Feb. 17, 2020: Ryan Easterday, a U.S. Navy commander from Davis

Mon, 02/17/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

IMG_4342 2.jpg

Commander Ryan Easterday watched Star Trek as a kid growing up in Davis, and liked the idea of leading a ship. When he was ready for college, the notion still had enough appeal for him to include the U.S. Naval Academy among the schools where he applied – and when his final choice came down to the University of California Santa Cruz or the academy, he chose the Navy. Easterday now commands the USS John McCain, a destroyer with a crew of about 320 based in Japan, and on today’s Davisville he talks about why he went to Annapolis instead of Santa Cruz, his ship, the Navy, some of his experiences, and how growing up in Davis has shaped him as an officer.

Gabe Lewin in the Studio Live, Recorded on Jan 31st, 2020

Fri, 01/31/2020 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

G Lewin.jpeg

Listen in now as Gabe Lewin is joined by vocalist Lane Suaraz.

Gabe Lewin started singing about the time he learned to walk. He picked up the guitar at 13, or 60 years ago, and then 15 years after that he took up the harmonica. His first professional stage appearance was in 1965 at The Troubadour in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In South Africa he learned a wide variety of musical styles, including very old, very new, and original songs. He learned old folk standards, new folk tunes, reggae tunes, bluegrass, and even a few classic rock and blues tunes.  The common thread is that all have real melodies!

Davisville, Jan. 27, 2020: The Davis Night Market. And freedges.

Mon, 01/27/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Ernst Oehninger, Valerie Weinborn (1).jpg

Twice weekly at 9:30 p.m., volunteers bring food donated by Davis restaurants and stores to tables in Central Park. Anyone who wants the food is then free to take what they want; the cooked food usually goes first. This is the Davis Night Market, created by students at UC Davis to reduce food waste in Davis and to get food to the hungry. The market serves about 30 people on an average night, and the founders would like to build it into a daily operation. Any food left over goes in the “freedges”—community refrigerators like the tiny libraries you see in front yards around town.

Today we talk with two of the Night Market founders, Valerie Weinborn and Ernst Oehninger, about why they do this, the reaction they’ve had, and what they hope to achieve. She’s a veterinarian from Chile who has a doctorate in Food Science; he’s a PhD student in Natural Resource Economics and comes from a family of farmers in Brazil.

Adrian West in the Studio, Recorded Jan 17th, 2020

Fri, 01/17/2020 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

Adrian West.jpg

Adrian West spends the hour with us in the KDRT studio. Listen now to his musical abilities.

His sound is original acoustic rock that sounds like Paul Simon meets Dave Matthews meets Talking Heads. His band also features vocal harmonies, guitar, electric violin, bass, drums, sometimes an alto sax, and a bit of live “looping.”

Born and raised in Montreal, Adrian is an exciting performer. A gifted vocalist, he moves effortlessly between guitar & violin, sometimes using live looping to add layers of sound and intrigue to his songs. With a knack for language that's simple yet poetic, he's not afraid to tackle difficult topics in his songwriting. "Safe Streets" tells an allegory about police violence, "Close Your Eyes" laments the beauty bias that pervades the mass media, and "Senses" entreats you to appreciate your senses while you can. But Adrian doesn't take any of this stuff too seriously; his lyrics are infused with a sense of hope and a touch of whimsy.
