COVID-19 Community Report Dec. 8th, 2020 - Episode 44 with Davis Mayor Gloria Partida

Tue, 12/08/2020 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-Gloria-Partida-120820-eps44.jpg

Dec. 8 marks nearly nine full months since the first shelter-in-place order back in March, and also Episode 44 of the "COVID-19 Community Report" on KDRT.  I've interviewed more than 70 people during this time, documenting the effects of the pandemic on communities, institutions, and individuals across Yolo County. Today we'll catch up with Davis Mayor Gloria Partida.

Municipalities have their own particular burdens to bear during this pandemic, from loss of sales tax and other revenue generated at the local level, to loss of income from state and federal governments. And yet, the work of running the City goes on. We'll hear about recent developments in Davis, from Commission appointments to police accountability, and learn more about a forthcoming Community Conversation on Public Safety Recommendations scheduled for Dec. 14.

Live Tuesdays at noon on KDRT 95.7FM and kdrt.org

Davisville, Dec. 7, 2020: Byrds co-founder Chris Hillman has stories to tell in ‘Time Between’

Mon, 12/07/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Chris Hillman Time Between.png

Chris Hillman co-founded the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Desert Rose Band. He helped create iconic recordings like “Eight Miles High,” The Gilded Palace of Sin and Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and his latest record, Bidin’ My Time in 2017, was produced by Tom Petty. One of his earliest steady paying gigs, in 1964, was in a concocted band whose ersatz hillbilly songs included a tune about a mule. The music was “horrible,” he says. But great adventures were about to begin. Now 76, Hillman has collected some of his stories and experiences in his new book Time Between, and talks about a few of them today on Davisville.

Thu, 12/03/2020 - 9:40pm | Jim Buchanan

KDRT-Live-Tracks-Me-and-Him-2016-DMA.jpg

This special holiday edition of Live Tracks was first aired in December 2018 when local guitar duo "Me and Him" (Kurt Roggli and Martin Lewis) appeared live in the studio for the first hour, and then featured guest "co-host" Kurt Roggli  for the second hour who spun tunes from his extensive collection of holiday music.  This acoustic duo Me and Him are well known in Davis and frequently appear at special holiday concerts and celebrations.  It has become a KDRT tradition to invite them to the studio with their "dualing" Martin guitars as part of our annual special holiday programming each December.

KDRT Speaks with Sound Archivist from the Bay-Area's Owsley Stanley Foundation on Silver Nine Volt Heart Dec. 3, 2020

Wed, 12/02/2020 - 4:45pm | Diane Crumley

KDRT-SNVH-interview-ali-akbar-khan-album-cover-120320 (2).jpg

Recently, the Owsley Stanley Foundation released the Sixth Chapter of  Bear's Sonic Journals : That Which Colors the Mind, a 2 CD-set featuring Ali Akbar Khan (known as the Bach of India). The album features a 2-hour live recording of a performance at the Family Dog at the Great Highway, in San Francisco on May 29, 1970. Recorded live from the soundboard by the legendary Grateful Dead soundman, Owsley Stanley, a.k.a "Bear", this release is thought to be one of the most evocative recordings of Ali Akbar Khan - a recipient of a MacArthur "genius grant", who has been identified as being a key influence on The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones and Santana.

COVID-19 Community Report Episode 43: Speaking with Yolo County Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson - Dec 1st, 2020

Tue, 12/01/2020 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-guest-Aimee-Sisson-PHO.jpeg

As Yolo County saw its adjusted daily case rate for the week ending Nov. 22 jump to 28.2 per 100,000 residents--up from 20.9 just four days prior--many of us are wondering what the numbers might look like 7-10 days after holiday gatherings at Thanksgiving.

It's a good moment to check in with Dr. Aimee Sisson, who joined Yolo County as its chief Public Health Officer in October after resigning from the same position in Placer County when officials there decided to lessen restrictions around COVID-19.

We'll talk about our numbers, what we might expect in the coming weeks and months, and generally check in about the state of public health in Yolo County. We'll also talk about the hard and sometimes demoralizing front-line work that public health officers face as they carry out the state's often unpopular mandates.

Davisville, Nov. 23, 2020: Movies and the pandemic, with Davis critic Derrick Bang

Mon, 11/23/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Derrick 1 Nov 2020.jpg

Even though the pandemic has closed theaters in Davis for most of 2020, we’re still presenting our annual movie show with Davis film critic Derrick Bang—even if only to learn what has survived the dislocations of the year. Derrick writes reviews for the Davis Enterprise and his blog, Derrick Bang on Film. We talk about how the pandemic has affected movie-making and his job as a critic, the films still coming out at what would normally be a big time of the year, and films he’s looking forward to. Because movies reflect the culture, I also asked him to list a few movies about pandemics, such as The Omega Man and Andromeda Strain.
