"We have a tropical situation where there are thousands of 'species' of music around and they're all constantly cross-breeding and hybridizing. It's very exciting, but you can't keep up with it easily." -- Brian Eno

Roots, Shoots and Leaves

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. And if you listen long enough, you may experience some musical enlightenment.

Twang Thang features outlaw country old and new, showcasing the folks who sowed the harder-edged musical seeds for what we today call Americana, as well as the newer artists who continue the tunes and outlaw ethos forward. George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Lucinda Willimans, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakum, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billie Jo Shaver ... Americana music didn't just show up one day — it has deep and varied country music roots. Twang Thang explores the originators, the newcomers, and the music that happened along the way!

Davisville, Oct. 12, 2020: Davis Shakespeare, the pandemic, and Frankenstein

Mon, 10/12/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Frankenstein image DSF.png

If 2020 had been normal, my plan was to talk about Frankenstein, which the Davis Shakespeare Festival was going to present this fall until the pandemic killed off in-person performances. Rob Salas, co-artistic director and co-founder of the festival, is my guest today, and we still talk about the play by Nick Dear, which is based on the book by Mary Shelley and presents a creature very different than the “green skin and neckbolts” image of the monster in the 1930s movie. We also talk about how the 10-year-old festival is holding up during the pandemic, how they’ve spent 2020, their thoughts about next year (which might still include Frankenstein), how Black Lives Matter has changed their mission, and why they chose Davis as a place to create a professional Equity theater company.

Alex Jordan is More Than a Subtle Musician: the Interview, Friday, October 2, 2020

Thu, 10/01/2020 - 11:06am | Pieter Pastoor

IMG_0009.JPG

Alex Jordan was born to music, playing first trumpet, then bass, then guitar—and always singing.  His musical influences ranged from jazz to musical theatre.  He studied his father’s extensive CD collection, in particular the Grateful Dead section, which considerably expanded his perception of what was music.  Listening to a live album, he had a revelation when he heard a passage in which silence was clearly part of the music. “It was quantifiably, certifiably, distinctly music, and it was dead silence. I’d never heard anything like that.  I don’t know that I became a Deadhead at that moment, but I sure got it.”

My guests this week are  Jesse Salinas,  Assessor/Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters for Yolo County, and artist and community organizer NJ Mvondo, to speak about the new Healing Art Project unfolding in Davis.

Jesse's office  is responsible for multiple key functions within Yolo County, but for this show,  we’ll focus on his role as registrar of voters. Jesse’s team has been very busy getting out information about the changes to voting during the Nov. 3 election cycle, and I'm delighted to speak with him and get fully up to speed on what we need to know here in Yolo County.

Davisville, Sept. 28, 2020: Davis housing, 6 months into the pandemic

Mon, 09/28/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

unusual sign for fall, 2020.jpg

On today’s Davisville we talk with Steve and Kit Boschken, Davis real estate experts and the owners of Boschken Properties, about the housing market in Davis this fall. Today's topics follow up our talk with Steve Boschken last May, and include apartment vacancies, the thin supply of homes for sale, rising home prices, the pandemic, unhealthy air from the wildfires, rents, buyers, trends, interest rates, lasting impacts, and not knowing when students will be able to resume in-person classes at UC Davis. Almost all UC Davis classes this fall are online, and could stay that way through the rest of the academic year.
