Davis Garden Show, July 1, 2021 -- What's a hybrid?

Thu, 07/01/2021 - 12:00pm | Don Shor

KDRT_CeanothusCollage.jpg

What's a cultivar? What's a hybrid? What's a selection? What's a variety? We get a long answer to a short question about Ceanothus "Concha" and Ceanothus "Ray Hartmann."

Also today we have a discussion of soil pH (probably not the problem in the situation described); the challenges of planting in compost instead of soil; raised planter woes; and  details on local water issues and Davis' good situation.

The Folk Brothers for June 30, 2021: We come from the land of ice and snow

Wed, 06/30/2021 - 11:10am | Peter Schiffman

Brother Bill is back from Iceland with greetings from KDRT listener and Dr. Volcano himself, Thor Thordarson (pictured here in front of a still steaming pahoehoe flow). On today's show, Bill shared highlights of his trip as well as some traditional Icelandic folk music from Barra Grimsdottir, her partner Chris Foster, and others. Also: tracks from both sides of the Atlantic from The Magpie Arc, Brooks Williams and friends, Haymakers, Joni Mitchell and James McMurtry. And some good banter about Townes Van Zandt!

Davisville, June 28, 2021: Entrepreneur says Davis should grow denser and add a lot more people

Mon, 06/28/2021 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Looking up.JPG

Tim Keller, a UC Davis alumnus who founded the Inventopia business incubator on Fifth Street in Davis, wants the community to seriously consider adding a lot more homes and population, perhaps to the tune of another 50,000 or 60,000 people over the next few decades. The growth and economic power created by UC Davis require it, he argues, and Davis is behind in meeting that demand. He’s a member of a new pro-growth group, Sustainable Growth Yolo, and explains his reasoning on today’s Davisville. One of his key objectives: Don't sprawl. Build dense.

This week's episode of Listening Lyrics digs deep into the case of a missing tomato. Then we move on to the Great Lakes, and zero in on a couple of guys who sit by Lake Erie and listen to KDRT. Great stories and some pretty cool music.

Davis Garden Show, June 24, 2021 -- perennials or reseeders?

Thu, 06/24/2021 - 12:00pm | Don Shor

common_names_confusing.png

"See you again next year!"  Today we discuss Don's list of Favorite Summer Perennials, and then we start going through his list of plants that "reseed freely." Both strategies mean we will see the same species in our garden year after year -- with perennials the plant stays in the same place, with re-seeding the species moves around (and sometimes changes color). We also discuss common name confusion, weed cloth over plum tree roots, the city's "Tree Watering" flyer, fruit set on tomatoes and zucchini and their expected yields, and (as usual) the weather and how it is affecting our plants.

Don Shor and Lois Richter are your hosts each week on the Davis Garden Show. To submit a question, email them at DavisGardenShow@gmail.com

That's Life for Don Shor

Thu, 06/24/2021 - 11:00am | Lois Richter

TL_DonShor_6-24-21_cover.png

Lois Richter says: In today's show, I talk with the "mystery man" Don Shor. Why do I call him a mystery man? Although I talk to Don every week about the Davis Garden Show (which we co-host), Don usually keeps himself to himself about non-plant-related things. He is a master of the terse reply: How are things at your farm? "Fine." What's happening with you? "I'm okay."

HOWEVER...  Today I got to interview him about his life, so I finally got answers to some questions! Did you know he never had a full-time job working for someone? Instead he went directly from graduating from UC Davis to opening a business in town -- Redwood Barn Nursery -- and will have been doing that for 40 years come August. Lots of history here. I've known Don since my days as a DCTV producer (1992-2003) and because I have known him so long, I could even ask him to explain things that happened 20 years ago. Lots more history! We ended discussing his plans for the future -- and, no, there will be no public tours at the farm.

The Folk Brothers for June 23, 2021: When Phil went all Elvis

Wed, 06/23/2021 - 11:10am | Peter Schiffman

Greatest_Hits_(Phil_Ochs_album_-_cover_art).jpg

Contrary to its title, Phil Ochs' final studio album -- 1970's Greatest Hits -- actually was a collection of new material that moved him in a new country/folk/rock musical direction, which today we'd call Americana. The album cover featured Ochs -- in homage to Elvis Presley -- dressed in a gold lame Nudie outfit. Also on today's show: new music from Adam Holmes. Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche, Dave Alvin, Dirk Powell, and Andrew Marlin. And much more!
