Sylvie Simmons' 'Blue On Blue' is Extraordinary: The Interview, Friday, Oct. 23, 2020

Tue, 10/20/2020 - 4:57pm | Pieter Pastoor

SS standing smile 2 copy 2.jpg

Sylvie Simmons writes about music, and plays music. She's an award-winning rock journalist - one of the very few women included among the predominantly male rock writing elite - and a best-selling author whose books have been translated into more than 30 languages.

Her most recent books are last year's Face It: Debbie Harry and, in 2012, the definitive Leonard Cohen biography. She has also written books on Johnny Cash, Serge Gainsbourg and Neil Young.

After four decades of writing about music and musicians, Sylvie did the near-impossible and crossed over to being a singer-songwriter herself, accompanying her original songs on a ukulele. Signing a record deal in 2014, she released her debut, Sylvie, which the UK Guardian called "one of the most beautiful albums of the year."

The Genius of Greg Tressel and His Music, on Listening Lyrics, Friday, Oct. 16, 2020

Thu, 10/15/2020 - 4:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

Promo Pic.png

Greg Tressel is this week's guest.

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Greg was exposed to wide range of musical styles, from psychedelic rock and blues, to the Bakersfield country sounds of central California. Starting bands as a teenager, and as a young man moving to Nashville with a songwriting -publishing contract with the Paramount Music Group, he continued to write and play his music.

Through the years, Greg moved into the management and promotion part of the music business, working with such artists as John Hiatt, Joe Bonamassa, and B.B. King. He now lives in southern Oregon.

Songwriting has always been his first love, and in the past few years Greg has released three diverse original albums of new music: “The Hard Way,”  “Ankle Deep in Love,” and his current “Half Way There,” which features the single and video  “Keep Facing the Sunshine.” It's a very upbeat song for our times.

Davisville, Oct. 12, 2020: Davis Shakespeare, the pandemic, and Frankenstein

Mon, 10/12/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Frankenstein image DSF.png

If 2020 had been normal, my plan was to talk about Frankenstein, which the Davis Shakespeare Festival was going to present this fall until the pandemic killed off in-person performances. Rob Salas, co-artistic director and co-founder of the festival, is my guest today, and we still talk about the play by Nick Dear, which is based on the book by Mary Shelley and presents a creature very different than the “green skin and neckbolts” image of the monster in the 1930s movie. We also talk about how the 10-year-old festival is holding up during the pandemic, how they’ve spent 2020, their thoughts about next year (which might still include Frankenstein), how Black Lives Matter has changed their mission, and why they chose Davis as a place to create a professional Equity theater company.

Tue, 10/06/2020 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-Yolo-Food-Bank-Pence-Gallery.jpg

This week's guests include Michael Bisch, executive director of the Yolo Food Bank and Natalie Nelson, executive director of the Pence Gallery in downtown Davis.

Tasked with the mission of reducing food insecurity in our county, the Yolo Food Bank has been distributing 60,000 meals per month. Michael talks about bringing food security to Davis during the pandemic, including partnerships with local college campuses and the Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter.  When asked what he is most grateful for he replied  "The 181 volunteer residents of Davis that are assisting their neighbors countywide, and the many food donors including local farmers, grocers and more".  There are still openings for volunteering to sort, pack, deliver and hand-out meal kits. Link to their website for additional information to volunteer.
