KDRT 95.7 FM is grassroots radio from Davis, CA, airing an eclectic mix of music and public-affairs programming. A project of nonprofit Davis Media Access, KDRT streams worldwide via KDRT.org.

Davis Music Connections

Davis has a very unique musical scene — from the Mondavi Center’s formal performances to the local clubs where bands and upcoming artists hone their craft. Local and visiting musicians are captured by Jim Buchanan on our Live Tracks program. On Davis Music Connections, we play past Davis bands of note, along with those who are currently touring, taking a little bit of Davis to the rest of the world.

Altan will be streaming their first live concert since March on September 25th via their facebook page. Estelle California is a singer/songwriter born in France. She started playing the piano when she was 5 and went on to study saxophone. Later, she was formally trained in opera. Her current life is a far cry from her childhood in France, where she suffered physical and mental abuse, and lived in an environment where she saw many people being discriminated against.

Estelle is a passionate artist, musician, writer, and activist dedicated to shining the light of resilience and bringing forth social healing throughout the world. Her single "Black is the True Light" has garnered significant media attention and resonated with people all over the globe.

Each week on the "COVID-19 Community Report," we share local news and resources, focusing on what’s impacting Davis and nearby cities in Yolo County during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today on Episode 35, I'll interview Koren Motekaitis about her longtime role co-directing youth swim program Davis AquaMonsters. We'll discuss impacts of the pandemic on youth sports, including how it's narrowing future options for recognition and scholarships. I'll also talk with Stacie Frerichs, executive director of the Davis Arts Center, about how they've had to pivot and change during the pandemic.

This unparalleled time we're living through affects not only our physical health, but our mental health as well. Today I speak with Sara Gavin, LMFT/LPCC. She serves as Chief Behavioral Health Officer at CommuniCare Health Centers, overseeing a 100-person team of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder services in Yolo County, and also sits on the Board of Directors of National Alliance for NAMI-Yolo. We'll speak about current mental health challenges, and what kinds of local resources are available. In our second interview, I chat with Melanie Carr, a Davis resident who's been offering a "Tuesday Table" through the pandemic, a "take what you need" offering in one Davis neighborhood.

Ryan Collins and Paul Doroshov first appeared on Davisville in July 2019 to talk about homelessness in Davis (“Many homeless people in Davis are finding homes, but more people are becoming homeless”). Today we catch up with developments since then, including the Daytime Respite Center that opened on L Street in February, and the impact of the pandemic. Ryan works directly with homeless people in Davis as the homeless outreach services coordinator for the city, and Paul is deputy police chief for Davis.

Born in Davis, Korean-American cellist Eunghee Cho earned second prize and the special award for Outstanding Chinese New Piece Performance at the Alice & Eleonore Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin, China. He is principal cellist of the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, artistic director of the Mellon Music Festival in Davis, and serves on the faculties of Middlesex Community College and Derby Academy.

He has been invited to perform at such international festivals as La Jolla Music Society’s Summerfest, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Piatigorsky International Cello Festival, Taos School of Music, Festival International d’Echternach, and Rencontres Franco Américaines de Musique Chambre. He is enrolled in New England Conservatory’s Doctor of Musical Arts Program under the guidance of distinguished pedagogue Laurence Lesser.
