KDRT 95.7 FM is grassroots radio from Davis, CA, airing an eclectic mix of music and public-affairs programming. A project of nonprofit Davis Media Access, KDRT streams worldwide via KDRT.org.

That California Sound! Local + Regional Music from The Golden State ... From Then ... To Now features local, regional, and small touring bands throughout California while highlighting the history and culture of California musicians, venues, teachers, recording studios, promoters, festivals, and general resources that enrich our community.

Ean Kimura & Erick Fierro, both second-year students at UC Davis, are part of the standup comedy scene in Davis. It’s not a big scene—Yelp’s list of 10 top comedy clubs in Davis stops at nine entries, and lists just one location that's actually in town—but we learn more about it on today’s show. We also talk about why Fierro and Kimura enjoy making people laugh, the UC Davis standup comedy club (possibly the same one Hasan Minhaj started), what makes good standup comedy, what happens when you bomb onstage, and more, including the t-shirt cannon bit they presented on the first edition of their KDVS campus radio station show In the Meantime (8 a.m. Mondays).

Vocalist Juniper Waller, percusionist Billy D. Thompson and bass player Jace Dorn of The Gold Souls were in the studio. The Gold Souls bring the driving grooves of funk, the rich textures of soul, and the compelling storytelling of the blues to the Northern California scene. With the dynamic Juniper Waller at the helm, the band combines their many influences to create a unique sound that rings true to the idioms that inspire them. Their recent efforts include the release and tour of their self-recorded and produced, eponymous EP in May of 2017. This release, while remaining an honest representation, is only the beginning of the band’s creative journey. A new single is scheduled for release Febuary 12, 2019.

Comedy and chronic pain might not seem to have much in common, but on today’s program, they do. UC Davis Continuing Lecturer Karma Waltonen teaches seminars on writing & performing stand-up comedy, among other subjects, and on Jan. 31 she’ll present her one-woman show “Chronic Pain: A Comedy,” at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center in Sacramento. Waltonen has wonderfully eclectic interests – her expertise ranges from The Simpsons to Margaret Atwood – and her sense of humor and comic timing, backed by her clear respect for the serious aspects of her subject, make this an engaging interview.

With members graduating from the Berklee College of Music and the Musician's Institute, Brotherly Mud respects the art of musical creation through both an educational and deeply human lens.

Constantly working to be true to their artistic spirits, Brotherly Mud is currently touring with their original material all over the West Coast, with shows, radio interviews and the occasional secret performance.
