Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live on the first, third and occasional fifth Friday of the month.

Live Friday 11am-1pm
Replays Sunday 9-11am

Davisville, Dec. 30, 2019: Biotech is changing the world, and Davis has a role

Mon, 12/30/2019 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Jim DeKloe Dec 21, 2019.jpeg

Biotechnology is changing lives, products and expectations, creating both possibilities and risks. The changes are enormous, and more are ahead. My guest today is Jim DeKloe (pictured), founder and director of the Industrial biotechnology program, and a professor of biological sciences and biotech, at Solano Community College. We talk about the center in Vacaville, its unusual (for a community college) bachelor’s degree, biotech, the creation of a ”life sciences corridor” between Sacramento and the Bay Area, the need for ethics and laws to keep up, and how a product he knew from his time at Genentech saved his 4-year-old son’s life.

Broken Glass Live in Studio, Recorded on Dec 20th, 2019

Fri, 12/20/2019 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

broken glass.jpg

This show was a blast and totally awesome - what a great way to end 2019.

Broken Glass, formed in December 2018, are 8th-graders who practice in their drummer’s garage. Performing at small gigs and school events, the band started by playing cover songs, and was soon creating originals. They play a variety of genres, but most often stay within the wider rock style. The members are Alexander (keyboard/vocals/guitar), Alden (guitarist),  Everett (bass), and Oscar (drums)

See playlist for details of the songs that inspired the individual members.

Davisville, Dec. 16, 2019: More traffic ahead

Mon, 12/16/2019 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

looking east I80 Davis 120519.jpg

Traffic on Interstate 80 through Davis is getting worse, and although proposed solutions are in the works, they’re several years in the future—assuming the money to pay for them can be found, and a consensus about what to do emerges. Today we talk with Anne Ternus-Bellamy, local government reporter for the Davis Enterprise, about the Yolo 80 project, other local traffic developments, and the spread of regional traffic into more streets in Davis, guided by apps that help people find paths around the clogs on I-80.

Spirits & Music & Yolo County, Recorded on Dec 13th, 2019

Fri, 12/13/2019 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

29palms.jpeg

Spirits, music and a county named Yolo. Anita and Jeff Boone and their two sons did something most of us dream about. Some years ago the family sat on their patio having a drink and talking about what kind of business would be fun for the whole family to get involved in. That led to Patio29 a spirits company in Winters, CA where the whole family is involved in creating whiskey and many other spirits from locally sourced grains and fruit. Jeff started as the distiller creating the magic of spirits but now his oldest son casts his spell on the process. In the charming tasting room a soft background of music relating to spirits is played, in fact the playlist is over 400 selections. We spent the hour talking shop and music so listen in.

Thankful for our Listeners, Programmers and Community's Generous Support

Thu, 12/12/2019 - 9:48pm | Diane Crumley

2019-Rootstock-KDRT-logo-colors-GS.jpg

As we look back upon a busy fall, we are grateful for the generosity shown during our 2019 Rootstock fundraising events. We greatly appreciate the MANY listeners who donated, for this support is truly what allows us to continue to produce our 24/7 local broadcast and streaming.

We celebrated our 15th anniversary at a diverse array of community venues, and were thrilled to make new friends, and to reconnect with longtime partners. In mid-November, we hit the "Grassroots Trail" with events that included Berryessa Brewing in Winters with The Muddy Waders, The Barn and Pantry Tuesday Open Mic Night in Dixon with Hattie Craven, 2nd Wednesday Jazz Night at the Root of Happiness Kava Bar in Davis, a special KDRT benefit at Woodstock's Pizza with The West Nile Ramblers, and concluded in Woodland at Sunday Sessions at Blue Note Brewing. Each venue is a hub for communities to gather and support their local musicians.
