KDRT 95.7 FM is grassroots radio from Davis, CA, airing an eclectic mix of music and public-affairs programming. A project of nonprofit Davis Media Access, KDRT streams worldwide via KDRT.org.

COVID-19 Community Report - Episode 2 - March 20, 2020

In Episode 2 - March 20, 2020 - we heard from Superintendent John Bowes of the Davis Joint Unified School District (DJUSD), and visited with community organizer Kate Mellon-Anibaba, founder of the incredibly active Covid-19 Yolo Community Response Group on Facebook. Superintendent Bowes reported DJUSD is actively working on both short and long-term strategies to provide home-learning instruction online. These two phases of instruction will be posted later today on the DJUSD website, social media page, and sent via email. The issue of the digital divide and equity is being addressed by working to provide Chromebooks and internet access to those in need. Also discussed were how the school meets and does business during this time, which Bowes called "a paradigm shift."

Davis Media Access - Temporary Closure

In an effort to protect our community of volunteers, public visitors, and staff, and consistent with current public health guidelines, we have made the decision to close the Davis Media Access and KDRT facility to the general public through the end of March. This decision is implemented with our closure at 6 pm this evening, Friday, March 13, 2020. As a community facility with heavy use and much shared equipment, we feel this is the most responsible way we can help #flattenthecurve, support social distancing, and help keep the COVID-19 virus from spreading.

Behind the scenes, here is what will be happening:

For the next two weeks, I’ll be offering a live show on KDRT on Tuesdays & Fridays from 12-12:30, repeating at 5 pm both days. The COVID-19 Community Report will focus on information and calls to action at the local level, and feature a resource roundup and calls with local elected officials and other community leaders. Breaking news will be shared on our social media platforms.

Davisville, March 9, 2020: The Avid Reader’s new owners

Erin and Brett Arnold bought the Avid Reader and Avid Reader Active this winter from longtime owner Alzada Knickerbocker. Buying the town’s last full bookstore, and their plans to keep it as a bookstore, is significant news if you’re interested in Davis, books, and/or downtown. The Arnolds visit Davisville today to talk about the store, bookselling, co-existing with Amazon, why the store has persisted, and why they see a good future for it. Some statistics support their optimism: Although sales of printed books in the United States fell about 1.2 percent in 2019 from the year before, they’re still up 16 percent from 2012.

Donut Exchange makes Bluegrass Music Come Alive. Recorded on Mar 6th, 2020

Donut Exchange is a folk group based in both Davis and in Berlin, Germany. Members Anya Sturm, Obin Sturm, and Emma Ware grew up playing traditional old-time, bluegrass, and Irish fiddle music. They blend the three styles on their debut album, Any Place Is Home, with 11 original tracks. The album, started from transatlantic voice memos, features a warm blend of strings, percussion, utensils, and the occasional bagpipes. Recorded in December 2019, during the only week when the bandmates were on the same continent, it captures the magic and charm of sleepless nights spent playing tunes with the people you love.

We opened the show with a tune from The HackensawBoys and played a new one from Mikey LP and the Kooks
