For Halloween this year, we have a return visit with the imaginatively named Lord Blood-Rah, host of Lord Blood-Rah’s Nerve-Wrackin’ Theatre on TV and Nerve-Wrackin’ Auditorium on radio. They're available in Davis on DCTV (channel 15 on Comcast, menu 99 on ATT U-Verse) or KDRT. Our guest, whose real name is Frank Wallace-Ailsworth, is a science-fiction/horror-show host in the tradition of Bob Wilkins and Elvira.

We talk about ... well, pretty much what you'd expect, such as classic radio, and movies from good to bad to charmingly stupid, plus what's in the “Venusian cocktail” created for one of his in-person showings at a movie palace in Orinda, and why anyone would watch a film like My Son, the Vampire. The story concerns a would-be vampire and his misguided robot. October is high season for stuff like this.

This is the time to plant those leafy greens to eat all winter long. Other winter vegetables include brassicas and root crops like carrots. You can plant in the ground, or in a barrel by the back door, but not INSIDE -- veggies are not grown as houseplants because they need more light. Could you build a greenhouse inside? Well, yes, but it requires grow lights and structures and ... It's just so much easier if you can grow them outside instead.

Lois asks "Suppose I fill that barrel out back with leafy greens. Do squirrels and rats like salad?" Well, yes; but it's not hard to make a cover to keep them out.

Paddy's Uilleann pipes and tin whistles guided the Irish cultural ambassadors through some 44 albums, six Grammy awards, numerous film scores, and musical collaborations with nearly everyone in the world of folk, country, and rock, not to mention many memorable shows at The Mondavi Center in Davis.

KDRT public affairs show Davisville wins S.F. Press Club awards for fourth year running

The San Francisco Press Club recently announced the winners of its 2021 Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards, and KDRT’s Davisville placed second and third among small noncommercial radio/audio public-affairs programs!

The winning episodes were an interview with Winters’ Nora Cary, “The Palms, on indefinite hiatus, is ending its lease in Winters” (Aug. 17, 2020), and a discussion with Ryan Easterday, a U.S. Navy commander from Davis (Feb. 17, 2020).

The contest recognizes excellent work by journalists and other communicators in 12 counties ranging from Monterey and Marin to Yolo. Davisville has previously won six S.F. Press Club awards for shows created in 2019, 2018 and 2017. On the program, journalist Bill Buchanan interviews people about events, news, and stories involving Davis. He produces the show, and his brother Jim Buchanan is the sound engineer. Both Davis residents have been volunteer programmers at KDRT for more than a decade.
