Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Twang Thang

Twang-Thang-farmstead-image-Yolo

Twang Thang features outlaw country old and new, showcasing the folks who sowed the harder-edged musical seeds for what we today call Americana, as well as the newer artists who continue the tunes and outlaw ethos forward. George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Lucinda Willimans, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakum, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billie Jo Shaver ... Americana music didn't just show up one day — it has deep and varied country music roots. Twang Thang explores the originators, the newcomers, and the music that happened along the way!

The Audio Ecotone

Roots, Shoots and Leaves

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. And if you listen long enough, you may experience some musical enlightenment.

Replays Saturday 7-9pm

Well, SOMEone was a little slow on the draw this week, didn't get a blog post up in time to announce this week's installment of Divine Intervention. But that's OK, because the Internet is like a freaking TIME MACHINE. That's right, through the miracle of modern technology, you can still here this week's DI as a podcast here. Why should you do that? Well, just look at this week's Vinyl Vespers feature. Right? Right!

Davisville, Dec. 12, 2016: The Palms’ New Owners Talk About Their Plans

Mon, 12/12/2016 - 6:05pm | Bill Buchanan

Andrew Fridae, Nora Cary.jpg

The Palms Playhouse has a big name in regional music. It started in a barn in south Davis 40 years ago, moved to Winters in 2002, and closed for most of 2016 after previous owner Dave Fleming retired. Now it’s reopening with new owners, Nora Cary and Andrew Fridae, both of Winters. On today’s show we talk about what inspired them to buy the Palms, their plans, their continuing emphasis on music, how they’ll use analytics to help identify acts who might do well at the venue, and performers they’d love to book. They also plan to display the green room wall from the barn era, which shows signatures from musicians who played at the club back in its Davis days.

Davisville, Nov. 28, 2016: More Signal! Plus We Open the Vault

Mon, 11/28/2016 - 6:05pm | Bill Buchanan

Buchanans

This evening KDRT begins a week of special programming to mark its campaign to boost the station’s signal. On Davisville, “special” means playing a few short segments created for other uses at KDRT that have never appeared on this show before: The Change Monster, and a skit we might call Rudolph’s Lawyer Negotiates With Santa on That Foggy Christmas Eve. But first we talk briefly with Davis Media Access Executive Director Autumn Labbe-Renault on why expanding KDRT’s signal to cover all of Davis is a good idea. This photo shows three of the folks behind tonight’s show (Autumn was gone before we could rope her into this shot): host Bill Buchanan, center, engineer Jim Buchanan, right, and Officially Unbiased Professional Singer Megan Buchanan, left, who shares her verdict on the musicality of Bill’s semi-finished boost-the-signal radio spot you’ll hear near the end, The Weak Signal Blues.

Austin James Hicks visits Listening Lyrics Friday 11/18/16 4:00PM

Thu, 11/17/2016 - 3:12pm | Pieter Pastoor

Austin James Hicks.JPG

Austin James Hicks vists KDRT

Our guest this week is Austin James Hicks. Born in Berkeley, CA.he has been playing guitar since he was 8 and singing since 10. Why does he do this? To him its simple but he is still searching for the right words.

"I guess because music is sort of everything. Not everything in sense of it being all I want to do but simply that it sort of feels like it's interwoven so tightly in all aspects of my life that it almost feels silly to talk about it as if it were separate from anything else I do. I like to think that everyone has that in some way with something. But if I were to break it down to simply the act of writing, playing, and performing, it's both what is getting me through this crazy life and what makes this crazy life worth getting through."- from an interview with Federica Buonsante for The Babel Harbinger.

Looking forward to a very interesting hour with Austin. You can visit Austin at http://www.austinjameshicks.com.

Davisville, Nov. 14, 2016: The Annual Movie Show with Davis Film Critic Derrick Bang

Mon, 11/14/2016 - 7:05pm | Bill Buchanan

Derrick and Bill, 111216.jpg

Derrick Bang, who writes movie reviews for his blog Derrick Bang on Film and The Davis Enterprise, returns this week for his annual conversation about year-end movies with program host Bill Buchanan (in the photo, that’s Derrick on the left). Bang talks about movies he thinks will be good, a few he believes will fail, sequels, the problem with first-run movie theaters that serve meals, and how 2016 has fared in terms of quality. “Hollywood stuff has lacked imagination this year, until summer, when things picked up a little bit,” he says. “[But] it has been a superb year for smaller, independent movies.”

This edition of Divine Intervention may feature a few (or more than a few) rock/punk/misc songs of protest, frustration, and other feelings that we may be feeling in this post-election world.
