Listening Lyrics' farewell show, Feb. 10, 2023

I thought a farewell show would be one with mixed emotions.

Not so, the guests as usual made it such a great hour.

Thank you to all the hundreds of musicians who have shared their talents with me and the audience.

Ten-plus years of weekly Friday shows has been such a wonderful gift to me and Jeanne. Each moment is a treasure.

Thank you Jess Kelly, Nat lefkof and The Raquetbangers (Robert Polon, Timur Katsnelson) for sharing this final episode with me.

Finally, a huge thank you to my co-host and wife for all of her support and love.

Pieter Pastoor

The Lyrics, on Listening Lyrics, Feb. 3, 2023

Oh this one is bittersweet. It's the second-to-last Listening Lyrics, and the last one with just myself in the studio. Next week's show will have plenty of guests, but I opted to do this alone.

I'm playing songs with lyrics that explain a feeling, with several local groups represented. They include Nat Lefkoff, Boot Juice, Bad Mother Nature, The Gold Souls, and Adrian West.

Celebrating Jerry Moss, on Listening Lyrics, Recorded Jan. 20, 2023

On Jan. 14, 2023, the Music Center (link is external)in Los Angeles had a celebration concert to honor Jerry Moss. Many artists participated, and today's Listening Lyrics  plays some of their music.

In 1960, Moss moved from New York to Los Angeles, where he teamed up with Herb Alpert,(link is external) forming Carnival Records in 1962 and running the company from an office in Alpert's garage. Discovering that the name was already taken, they dubbed their new company A&M Records.

In 1987, Moss and Alpert sold A&M to PolyGram Records for a reported $500 million. Both continued to manage the label until 1993, when they left because of frustrations with PolyGram's constant pressure to force the label to fit into its corporate culture. In 1998, Alpert and Moss sued PolyGram for breach of the integrity clause, eventually settling for an additional $200 million.

For Opa, from Wyatt, on Listening Lyrics, Dec. 30, 2022

A few weeks ago I was in Portland visiting my daughter and her family. While there, I drove my  grandson to high school every morning. He would hop into the car and link his phone to my radio, and off we went, listening to his music. Wyatt is 15, and I really liked his music selections. I asked him to send me some of his playlist, and that is what you will hear on this hour of Listening Lyrics. It's a rather sophisticated selection of music old and new, and perfect for my last show in 2022.

Thank you, Wyatt. Happy New Year all,

Pieter

The Next Noel with Billy Larkin, on Listening Lyrics, Dec. 23, 2022

This holiday CD is a rare beauty. There's such depth to this music, a limitless well of music and sounds. It defies a genre, but let's just say it's a mix of jazz, electronica, and classical. Ekimi is a duo originally from Cincinnati, comprised of Billy Larkin (piano and synthesizer) and Chris Dahlgren (bass, electronic sarod and percussions). Both Billy and Chris are classically trained. Billy joins me in the studio to share his thoughts on this truly wonderful CD.

Definitely one fine show Pieter & Jeanne. It was hearing the eclectic mix of music which brought on a rush of memories. Notably, Phillip Glass’ “Open the Kingdom” made me think on my personal favorite Glass piece, the score to the film; Powaqqatsi. As an aside, having a grandchild with Aspergers I remembered listening to an interview with Music Critic, Tim Page who revealed that after being diagnosed as having Aspergers realized that it was Glass’ minimalist focus on each individual note/sound which had him absolutely love Glass’ works; listening by the hour and eventually seeking a career in music. At the time I heard that interview it proved to be just the right positive “punch” I needed while reflecting the future opportunities for my own grandchild.  The wonder of music is indeed powerful.

Thanks - we had fun putting it together.

Once I get all of your albums cleaned up - I'm doing a show on your collection. I think I'll call it Vinyl - one mans trash reaps another mans treasure. :)

If I lived in the Davis area I'd chase these two around to every one of their gigs. What a find!

Surely this was a relaxing hour complete with great banter and music. All that was missing was for all of us sitting around with some after dinner Port and maybe a fire in the fireplace as the conversation carried on.

You and Jeanne were so right about the old 78s and their scratch bringing something special to the listening experience. The occasional totally 'dead' moments found on CDs are almost jarring.

Loved Alpert's opening & Justin's closing bumps.

Had I realized just how wonderfully mellow this show was I would have listened in the evening with a cup of caffeine free Peppermint tea and my feet up on the table. As it was, listening in the morning, it was still one I was gald I did not miss.

Just discovered that I am never too old to learn -- this week Chris Clark opened up a whole new pathway leading to a greater appreciation of and the enchantment of jazz.

Thanks for having Chris Clark on the show Pieter.

Pieter!!! I was listening to few of your shows today.
First- this is high quality stuff!!!! I was blown away!!! great music, great interviews, great ideas for the show. I'm a fan!!!!
Secondly- You two have great communication there.
Third- for me, it is just brilliant to be able to listen to you two. Your voice sounds so familiar. It feels like sitting with you in the same room. You sound so calm and I just LOVE it.

Mesmerizing show Pieter. Gave me that moment of pause and allowed me to begin wrapping my arms around music and lyrics which will let calm settle in. An excellent compilation of wonderful words and sounds. Thanks.

Love the new dimension and the seamless, feed-each-other, dimension it gives the program's back and forth banter. Great music selection and accompanying background info this week!
