Moon Hooch Visits KDRT, Thursday, Nov 10

KDRT broadcaster Dug Deep will host New York City trio Moon Hooch for an interview in the KDRT studio on Thursday, November 10 at 4:00 pm. Moon Hooch are saxophone players Mike Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen, and drummer James Muschler. The group’s live performances make avant-garde music seem fun and approachable and spark a raw, transcendent energy that blends elements of jazz, groove, funk, and – at its core – the pulse-pounding tribal urgency of electronic dance music. The trio has gone from playing on New York City subway platforms to selling out major venues around the world.  The Davis Live Music Collective presents Moon Hooch with special guest Honeycomb on Thursday, November 10, at Odd Fellows Hall in Davis, CA.  Doors open at 7:30p.

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass - What Now My Love

Album of the Week, Nov 10, 2016

KDRT's Pieter Pastoor brought up Herb Alpert in a conversation we had about a year ago on his radio show. I knew the name, but had no idea who he was beyond that. My wife and I happened upon a stack of his records for 99 cents each at Armadillo Music about a week later and bought them all up. So cheap, why not? Well, turns out we love them all and have listened regularly ever since.

Pieter is joining me in the studio to play one of my favorites, "What Now My Love." Alpert is in his 80s and still making music. He's also the "A" in A&M Records, so there's plenty to talk about. The record we're playing is only 29 minutes long, so we plan on playing some other delights as well during the hours.

Album of the Week (10/27) Wand ~ 1000 Days

Wand 1000 Days

Wand is a band that I discovered because my friend Kaz Mirblouk posted a link to their KEXP live performance and I was floored. Over the course of a few weeks, I found myself gravitating to one of their three studio albums on a daily basis.

This trio has a lot of history with L.A. and Bay Area garage pyschedelic rock artists, such as Mikal Cronin and Ty Segal; performing with, supporting tours and recording with similar producers, such as local legend, Chris Woodhouse.

1000 Days is their most recent lp (2015) so I'll start with it, but there will be time to jump into the other two. As a pround owner of all three on vinyl, I'll be happy to share Wand with you today. [Then again, Kaz has his own awesome record, so maybe I'll fill the time with a few from it. If not, click here: https://kazmirblouk.bandcamp.com]

Wikipedia suggests that they're taking their time with the next album. I hope you'll come away from this episode with eager anticipation of that release. And of course, a TOUR!

Album of the Week - Fiona Apple - "Tidal"

Fiona Apple - Tidal cover art

This week's featured album is Fiona Apple's Tidal. Apple's first studio record, it was released in July 1996 on both Work and Columbia Records. By the following year, the release had gone triple platinum, producing no less than six singles. Rolling Stone selected Tidal as one of the best records of the 90s. Quoting RS, "Apple's husky voice and jazzy melodies give an unexpected weight to her confessions on Tidal, as the 19-year-old New York art waif broods over adolescent malaise in off-kilter, insinuating piano ballads like 'Never Is a Promise.' She also comes up with a knockdown theme song in the anomalously hard-rocking 'Criminal,' the anthem of a young woman who's been careless with a delicate man and even more careless with her delicate self." Art waif, indeed.

KDRT's Album of the Week airs every Thursday evening at 5 p.m. PT on KDRT. This week's host is Jess Goddesse.
