KDRT 95.7 FM is grassroots radio from Davis, CA, airing an eclectic mix of music and public-affairs programming. A project of nonprofit Davis Media Access, KDRT streams worldwide via KDRT.org.

Eye On Sports is a talk radio show focused on local sports in the Sacramento/Davis area that occasionally covers National Sports. Hosts Chuck and Cody have been involved with sports both nationally and locally for more than 15 years and want to share their opinions and initiate discussion to the public through conversation and occasional outside interviews. This show will not be politically driven in anyway. The conversation will cover the results , local impact, business and psychology of sports.

Over his decades-long career, Davis High School Graduate Michael Franti has spanned a plethora of musical genres, blending hip hop, rock, reggae, funk, and even jazz. On his latest LP, SOULROCKER, Franti adds an electronic dance element to his music, branching out even further from his more acoustic past. This new style comes through best on "We Are All Earthlings," which wouldn't sound out of place at a Miami beach party. The album retains quite an optimistic tone throughout in regards to both the pleasing pop melodies and the inspiring lyrics, especially on relaxed jam "Still Standing" and the upbeat and energetic "My Lord." While this album is defenitely a new direction for Michael Franti and Spearhead, their are clear connections to their older works. "Summertime Is In Our Hands," recalling the hopeful summertime jams the group became famouos for, sounds like it was taken straight from 2010 LP The Sound of Sunshine. "Good To Be Alive Today" blends the political activism of Franti's career with unrelenting optimism on a very inspring mellow hip-hop track, a clear standout on the album.

Getting these guys in the studio took a while but we have them this week. The Bottom Dwellers are a four-piece Americana band from Woodland, California. Formed in 2003, the group has three full-length releases under their belts, “Deep on the Line,” “Twang Americana,” and “Think I Need a Drink.” With original songs ranging from twangy and gritty to sweet and creepy, the Bottom Dwellers have a uniquely Northern-Californian sound. Happy Birthday Bernard Herrmann on Gary Chew: 3rd Streaming - Friday 6/24 at 3PM

Bernard Herrmann would be 105 years old this June 29th. He composed the music for “Psycho.” But Gary Chew, who hosts and programs Third Streaming, will give as good a taste in motion picture music as Herrmann's “Psycho” score with Bernie's earlier work for the 1966 film “Fahrenheit 451.” That's Ray Bradbury’s dark, futuristic tale that lets you know at what temperature the pages of library books burst into flames. Gary has also placed a classical/jazz reading into his Friday mix that comes from Leo Delibes’ opera “Lakmé.” Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone perform. The rest of the program is taken up with the smooth, luxurious sounds of bossa nova. Bireli Legrene’s guitar leads off the set; following is the late, great jazz singer Susannah McCorkle's recording of Jobim's “Outra Vez.” Violinist Aaron Weinstein closes with giving undivided attention to Luis Bonfa’s “Samba de Orpheu.” Your ear deserves it.

Local talent continues to impress and this week's guest is no exception. Born and raised in Woodland, CA, Seth Cooper, the lead singer and instrumentalist for indie band Alamo Merchant, swoons in high falsetto and rumbling baritone to script tragedies ripped right from the silver screen. Whether it be the idolization of the disco era or a cold, meditative drive through the blizzards of West Texas, Cooper's stories convey a sense of farm boy wit and wonder with the world at large.

All Listening Lyrics shows are live on Fridays from 4-5PM (PT) on KDRT 95.7FM. For those outside the listening area, the show will stream live online at KDRT.org . It will also be available for replays in the show archives or as an podcast on iTunes under LISTENING LYRICS.

Album Review: St. Germain (self-titled)

St. Germain

St. Germain, the stage name for french musician Ludovic Navarre, has been recording music since the early 1990s, but his latest, self-titled work is only his 4th full-length LP to be released, and his first in 15 years. While St. Germain's earlier album blended jazz and pop, his latest album brings Afro-pop sounds into the mix with a plethora of exotic instruments while still maintaining clean and high quality production. Several tracks on the album utilize the staccatto sounds of the N'goni and Kora instruments, while multiple others have African vocalists on the few non-instrumental tracks. However, it is the instrumental tracks where Navarre's skill as a producer really stand out, building towards choruses with several layers of melodies, from the steady drums to the meandering string solos. The standout instrumental track is "Hanky Panky," a funky tune that illustrates St. Germain at the top of their game. In the end, St. Germain is nothing if not original, full of new sounds and daring writing and production.

In the early 80s, a foreign film titled Diva came to America. In that slightly off-center movie for most Americans, there was an aria sung by Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez that riveted anyone who happened to be listening: Alfredo Catalani's haunting solo piece for soprano from his opera "La Wally." That and birthday salutes to Igor Stravinsky, Cole Porter, and Chick Corea are on Gary's agenda. More soundtrack music rounds out this week's 3rd Streaming: Jean-Yves Thibaudet at the piano with the English Chamber Orchestra plays selections from the totally excellent film directed by Joe Wright: "Atonement," which was and remains a winning piece of cinema. Listen for music from the movie, composed by Dario Marinelli. If you haven't seen this 2007 release... do.

Album Review: My Way Home, by Eli "Paperboy" Reed

My Way Home

My Way Home is the fifth full-length LP for Soulful R&B artist Eli "Paperboy" Reed, and his return to indie labels following a brief stint with Warner Brothers. In contrast with his last effort, the glitzy and glamorous Nights Like This, Reed's latest is less produced but more organic, soulful, and artistic. Reed's background in church gospel really comes through, with his voice crooning emotionally about life, love, and religion, with songs like "Eyes on You" and the impressive second track "Your Sins Will Find You Out" using religion as a major theme. The album has several fun and frenetic tracks bound to get audiences grooving, especially lead single "Hold Out" and the frantic "The Strangest Thing," both of which see Reed stretch his vocal chords to the very limit of human capacity. Title Track "My Way Home" is one of the more laidback and rythymic songs on the album, with Reed crooning about his long journey home. Lastly, the second to last track on the 11-song LP, "A Few Days More," is quite a standout, with a fantastically funky rythym reminiscent of a bluessy Alabama Shakes single finishing the album on quite a high note.
