Bumptet visits Listening Lyrics on KDRT Friday 10/30/16 at 4:00PM

Thu, 09/29/2016 - 4:56pm | Pieter Pastoor

Bumptet.jpg

Bumptet to appear on KDRT 95.7 Davis, CA

Groove masters The Bumptet  bring reckless sophistication to each performance with an improvisational, genre-bending approach to music. Their compositions range in style and complexity, moving from deep funk grooves to epic rock crescendos to intricate, fusion-esque lines and back again–with improvisation, forward motion, and an in-the-moment attitude as the only constants.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of John Scofield, MMW, Garaj Mahal, the Headhunters, and Phish, the Northern California quintet takes listeners on a spirited journey that must be seen live in order to fully appreciate the level of musicianship and soul they bring to every show.  But don’t expect to hear carbon copy renditions of their tunes on stage.  The Bumptet pride themselves on delivering high energy, improvised sets of funk music with skillfully adept execution (including the occasional foray into the jam band outer stratosphere!).

Ryan Scott Long "beats" his way to appear on Listening Lyrics Friday, September 23, 2016 at 4:00PM

Tue, 09/20/2016 - 3:16pm | Pieter Pastoor

r c long.jpg

Ryan Scott Long vists Listening Lyrics on KDRT, kdrt, listening lyrics, Pieter Pastoor,

Drummer/composer Ryan Scott Long continues his life long fascination with music that's led him to study drumming and improvisation with Scott Amendola, Simon Lott, Hamir Atwal, Joshua Smith & William Woodley and many other greats.

With his forward-thinking approach powering what may be an exciting new style of drumming, there's a bright future in store for Ryan as he continues to make his mark.

Ryan has recorded/played with Mike Sopko(Bill Laswell, Dosh), Thomas Pridgen(ex The Mars Volta), Vir McCoy(Hamsa Lila, ex Mickey Hart Band), Michael James Booker, Sam Johnson Band, Beforia, Limnus, Scott Barkan, Delphi Freeman, Anna Borja, Joshua Smith(ex Peter Rowan) & many more.

Most recently Ryan released “Just Like We Used To” with his band BroJazz in May of 2016. BroJazz features Ryan on drums, Ben Wallace-Ailsworth on bass and renowned saxophonist Joshua Smith. Oz Fritz describes BroJazz as “a shapeshifting experiment in postmodern jazz that can change course from a heavy, industrial, noisy, trance groove to soft, light, sweet, delicate, waterfall melodies in the blink of an eye; spin your sensibility 180 degrees then drop you off back home with lyrical tenderness and a wink and a smile.”

Davisville, Sept. 19, 2016: More People Than Homes to Hold Them

Mon, 09/19/2016 - 6:55pm | Bill Buchanan

For sale.jpg

More people are coming to Davis to study, work, or live, but the supply of housing isn’t keeping pace, especially with UC Davis adding thousands of new students. Today we talk with Davis real estate broker Steve Boschken about current prices, rents, the spillover to Woodland, other trends, and potential options. Boschken has roots in town -- he grew up here, and also studied environmental design and urban planning at UC Davis.

“I don’t think that the way we patchwork new subdivisions in, when they do finally get in, is the best way to plan a community,” he says. “They’re planning it only on what’s here in front of them today, instead of what Davis is going to look like 100 years from now.

Who are these men? Why are they a part of this blog post? Well, one of them—and you can probably guess which by the photo (His eyes follow you around the room!)—is this evening's featured Vinyl Vespers artist. Who knows in what record bin he was languishing, but we've rescued him for tonight's worship service. As for the other guy—the one you either recognize or feel you should—we'll be spinning a tune from a record that sports the most-racy of his album covers. Tune in to find out more on these men, new music, and other assorted fun on Divine Intervention, broadcasting live 7-9p Pacific. For replay info, visit the program page.

Album Review: I Was on the Moon, by Owen Plant

Sun, 09/18/2016 - 9:36pm | Scott Korinke

I Was on the Moon, Owen Plant

I Was on the Moon

I Was on the Moon is the 7th release by Owen Plant, a folk-pop artist from Georgia with a 15 year career. The folk side of Plant takes center stage on his latest release, a melancholy set of laidback, introspective folk songs. The tunes are emotional but not distraught, optimistic but not exuberant, exhibiting small-town charm alongside radio friendly melodies. Overall, the album offers melancholy vibes to put the listener into a peaceful state of mind. The best track on the album is probably "Riverside," a song about finding peace and happiness by living the simple life "down by the riverside," as the chorus sings. "Unfettered Untied" is another fun and upbeat standout, while the slow, deliberate yet thoroughly enjoyable track "Ride With Me" allows Plant to display his considerable vocal talents. The final track on the album is a surreal, mysterious, and nearly pyschadelic take on Bill Withers' classic song "Ain't No Sunshine." For fans of folk artists such as Ben Harper and Amos Lee, I Was on the Moon is definitely an enjoyable and reccommendable listen.
