Album of the Week - Fiona Apple - "Tidal"

Thu, 10/20/2016 - 4:44pm | Jess Goddésse

fionaapple.jpg

Fiona Apple - Tidal cover art

This week's featured album is Fiona Apple's Tidal. Apple's first studio record, it was released in July 1996 on both Work and Columbia Records. By the following year, the release had gone triple platinum, producing no less than six singles. Rolling Stone selected Tidal as one of the best records of the 90s. Quoting RS, "Apple's husky voice and jazzy melodies give an unexpected weight to her confessions on Tidal, as the 19-year-old New York art waif broods over adolescent malaise in off-kilter, insinuating piano ballads like 'Never Is a Promise.' She also comes up with a knockdown theme song in the anomalously hard-rocking 'Criminal,' the anthem of a young woman who's been careless with a delicate man and even more careless with her delicate self." Art waif, indeed.

KDRT's Album of the Week airs every Thursday evening at 5 p.m. PT on KDRT. This week's host is Jess Goddesse.

Davisville, Oct. 17, 2016: Why Gratitude Works

Mon, 10/17/2016 - 6:25pm | Bill Buchanan

Rachel Cross.jpg

Rachel Cross lives in Davis, works as a registered nurse at a state prison, and previously taught developmental psychology at Sacramento State. For four Thursdays starting Oct. 27, she's teaching a short, free series on gratitude -- not for money or as part of a program, but because she “can’t not" do it. She feels compelled, driven by the demonstrated value of gratitude as a practice -- as something you do. Next month, many people won't be happy with the result of the presidential election, whoever wins. How does gratitude apply there? Does too much gratitude breed complacency ... and who should you be grateful to? We get into all that. Her thoughtful answers draw on her training and experience.

'Divine Intervention' Strikes - M 10/17 7-9p PT

Mon, 10/17/2016 - 6:12pm | Jess Goddésse

square dance.jpg

Square Dance Party cover art

Tonight on Divine Intervention, we have an interesting Vinyl Vespers feature. It's another case of "Will it be awfully good...or just plain awful?" Specifically, we'll hear Mac Gant and his Tennessee Dew Drops—that's the bit that sounds like it might be mighty good. But the record is Square Dance Calls and Instructions—that's the worrisome part. Either way, we'll  have an enjoyable worship, along with much rock, pop, and otherwise swingin' sounds, including the possibility of brand-new tracks from Emma Ruth Rundle, Ken De Poto, and more new releases. We'll try to slip in some local flavor, to boot, such as something from Oakland's T Sisters, who'll be performing hereabouts soon thanks to the Davis Live Music Collective. Tune in live, 7-9p Pacific. Want replays/playlists? Visit the program page.

Free Solo Climbing on Listening Lyrics 10/14/16

Fri, 10/14/2016 - 1:46pm | Pieter Pastoor

Alex Honnold.jpg

Free Solo Climbing, Listening Lyrics, KDRT,

A little different Listening Lyrics - we focus on free solo climbing. Free solo climbing, also known as free soloing, is a form of free climbing and solo climbing where the climber (or free soloist) performs alone and without using any ropes, harnesses or other protective equipment, relying entirely on his or her ability instead. Unlike in bouldering, free soloists typically climb above safe heights, where a fall would always result in serious injury or death. In ordinary free climbing, instead, safety gear is used to protect from falls, although not to assist the ascent.

Album of the Week - Lubbock on Everything by Terry Allen -- October 13th 2016

Thu, 10/13/2016 - 4:00pm | Dug Deep

Lubbock.jpg

This week's Album of the Week features a classic you may well have never heard of: Lubbock on Everything by Terry Allen and the Panhandle Mystery Band from 1979, a record that has over the years become known as a seminal Americana recording. Lubbock on Everything  is visual artist Terry Allen’s love letter to the hometown that he left the day after he graduated high school and drove out to LA with his wife, artist/writer Jo Harvey Allen. It rocks some, but it swaggers plenty…and jigs…and two-steps. It’s really an autobiographical snapshot of West Texas culture, with a couple of stories about Terry’s early experiences in the bigtime art world tossed in for good measure. Rolling Stone called it one of the most important records of the 1970s. We are pretty sure Terry knew that when he recorded it. The deluxe  reissue treatment is being re-released this week!

'Divine Intervention' Strikes - M 10/10 7-9p PT

Mon, 10/10/2016 - 6:31pm | Jess Goddésse

snuffgarrett.jpg

Snuff Garrett cover art

This week on Divine Intervention, we'll do the new music thang, with lots of rock and pop and maybe some punk and probably some r&b -- you know the drill. "Vinyl Vespers" will be a true surprise -- we have no idea if the pictured album is good, bad, an extreme version of either of those adjectives, or blandly somewhere in between. Yes, we could have educated ourselves about the artist, but hostesse Jess Goddesse likes to be (un)pleasantly surprised along with the audience, and so we'll all hear it together, probably for the first time on DI, unless you happen to be in the know on ol' Snuff. Tune in live, 7-9p Pacific. Want replays/playlists? Visit the program page.
