Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

E-Town

eTown KDRT

E-Town, taped before a live audience in Boulder, Colorado, features today’s top folk and Americana artists, along with information and discussions on the environment and conservation. Host Nick Forster nimbly walks the line between musician and radio journalist, playing guitar, mandolin, or lap steel with musical guests and then switching gears to engage artists in conversation. Co-host Helen Forster lends her voice to both the spoken and musical portions of the show.

Roots, Shoots and Leaves

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. And if you listen long enough, you may experience some musical enlightenment.

Live Tuesday 6-8pm
Replays Saturday 7-9pm

The Folk Brothers for Oct. 20, 2021: Siccar Point

Wed, 10/20/2021 - 11:10am | Peter Schiffman

Unknown.jpeg

In summer 1788, geologist James Hutton sailed along the coast south of Edinburgh to Siccar Point, where outcropings of vertically-tilted gray slate were (and still are) overlain by nearly flat-lying red sandstone. A product of the Scottish Enlightment, Hutton correctly reasoned that it would be impossible to explain what he observed in the context of an Earth that was -- as then believed -- only 6,000 years old.

Hutton is considered the father of modern geology, and the first who proposed the concept of "deep time." On their new album, Karine Polwart and Dave Milligan tell the story of Siccar Point much more elegantly. Also on today's show, new music from Jason Isbell, Two Bird Stone, Adam Holmes, Martyn Joseph, Geoff Muldaur, and Norman Blake.

Davisville, Oct. 18, 2021: The Return of Lord Blood-Rah … which sounds like a title for one of the movies he hosts

Mon, 10/18/2021 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Boo.JPG

For Halloween this year, we have a return visit with the imaginatively named Lord Blood-Rah, host of Lord Blood-Rah’s Nerve-Wrackin’ Theatre on TV and Nerve-Wrackin’ Auditorium on radio. They're available in Davis on DCTV (channel 15 on Comcast, menu 99 on ATT U-Verse) or KDRT. Our guest, whose real name is Frank Wallace-Ailsworth, is a science-fiction/horror-show host in the tradition of Bob Wilkins and Elvira.

We talk about ... well, pretty much what you'd expect, such as classic radio, and movies from good to bad to charmingly stupid, plus what's in the “Venusian cocktail” created for one of his in-person showings at a movie palace in Orinda, and why anyone would watch a film like My Son, the Vampire. The story concerns a would-be vampire and his misguided robot. October is high season for stuff like this.

Davis Garden Show, Oct. 14, 2021 -- Leafy greens, lawns to meadows, weed management

Thu, 10/14/2021 - 12:00pm | Don Shor

KDRT_OctoberScenes-DGS-500.jpeg

This is the time to plant those leafy greens to eat all winter long. Other winter vegetables include brassicas and root crops like carrots. You can plant in the ground, or in a barrel by the back door, but not INSIDE -- veggies are not grown as houseplants because they need more light. Could you build a greenhouse inside? Well, yes, but it requires grow lights and structures and ...  It's just so much easier if you can grow them outside instead.

Lois asks "Suppose I fill that barrel out back with leafy greens. Do squirrels and rats like salad?"  Well, yes; but it's not hard to make a cover to keep them out.

KDRT public affairs show Davisville wins S.F. Press Club awards for fourth year running

Sun, 10/10/2021 - 12:36pm | Diane Crumley

KDRT-fb-Davisville-SF-Press-Club-logo.jpg

The San Francisco Press Club recently announced the winners of its 2021 Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards, and KDRT’s Davisville placed second and third among small noncommercial radio/audio public-affairs programs!

The winning episodes were an interview with Winters’ Nora Cary, “The Palms, on indefinite hiatus, is ending its lease in Winters” (Aug. 17, 2020), and a discussion with Ryan Easterday, a U.S. Navy commander from Davis (Feb. 17, 2020).

The contest recognizes excellent work by journalists and other communicators in 12 counties ranging from Monterey and Marin to Yolo. Davisville has previously won six S.F. Press Club awards for shows created in 2019, 2018 and 2017. On the program, journalist Bill Buchanan interviews people about events, news, and stories involving Davis. He produces the show, and his brother Jim Buchanan is the sound engineer. Both Davis residents have been volunteer programmers at KDRT for more than a decade.
