50. Ultimate

With its fast-paced action and the extreme speed, stamina, and agility of its players, the sport of Ultimate definitely lives up to its name. Find out how Ultimate got its start, why "frisbee" was dropped from its official name, and when it could become an Olympic sport. Did you know that early games were played with pie-tins, most leagues have no referees, players call their own fouls, and use rock-paper-scissors to figure out which team starts the game? Keenan McKelvey and Luke Adel from UC Davis’ Ultimate Team tell us about why they got into the sport and how players can up their game. Then visit Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the 2022 USA Ultimate College Championships were just held. There we check out a lake under an office building, an immense dinosaur skull, the world’s largest outdoor music festival, and the oldest soccer team in the United States.

Big Joe Daddy in the studio, on Listening Lyrics, May 27, 2022

Joey Wisgirda (Big Joe Daddy) has been playing trumpet since the age of 9. He has studied jazz theory and composition with jazz legend John Tchicai, and performed throughout California with a diverse range of players that includes Joe Craven and Rick Montgomery (David Grisman Quintet), Fully Fullwood (Peter Tosh), reggae superstar Alton Ellis, Hamsa Lila, and John Tchicai. He has opened for such acts as John Scofield,  Galactic, Charlie Hunter, Bassnectar, Kraddy, and Tipper.

For the past decade, Joey has extended his musical efforts into the computer realm, using  soft- and hardware synths, and tying it all together with a Morrison Digital Trumpet (MDT) to morph from jazz and funk to breakbeats and dub. His live performances on Ableton and the MDT are cutting edge.

Cowboy Tracks May 27 2022 West Coast Vibe

Today's show is called "West Coast Vibe" and is a bit different from most other Cowboy Tracks shows. We tend to focus on western songs about the cowboy lifestyle but the western music genre is so much broader and encompasses many different aspects of life in the west. Western songs from the West Coast;  California, Oregon and Washington,  have their own kind of vibe and many unique music styles were born on the West Coast. (Rebroadcast)
