Praise Time with Preacher

Praise Time with Preacher

The word "gospel" is derived for the old Anglo-Saxon word meaning “good message” or “good news." Host Preacher believes gospel music is powerful, whether the listener is or is not Christian — that everyone can enjoy listening to gospel because it is uplifting and inspiring, sung with passion and belief from the artist, touching all who hear it in a good and heartfelt way. The aim of Praise Time is to help listeners find what Preacher believes lives in everyone: a good spirit that drives us to be the best we can be.

Live Tuesday 4-5pm
Replays Sunday 7-8am

Jazz After Dark, June 6, 2023

Tue, 06/06/2023 - 5:00pm | Don Shor

earl hines pics.png

Tonight on Jazz After Dark: a retrospective of the career of jazz pianist Earl Hines. His career spanned 1920 to 1983 and bridged early jazz, swing, bebop, and more. In his later career resurgence he did many solo performances and duets, producing over a hundred albums in the 1960s and '70s.

We’ll hear selections from his early work with Louis Armstrong, some swing recordings from Chicago in the 1930s, some live performances solo and with his orchestra from the 1950s and '60s, and then duets with Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Rushing, and Paul Gonsalves. Then a bit of Gershwin and a live performance from 1973.

Kyle Monhollen reviews the 2023 Davis Music Fest and the role of volunteers.

The event's website says the Davis Music Festival (June 16-18 this year) is "a multi-venue multi-genre live music event showcasing local, regional and touring artists – all to benefit local arts nonprofits. It’s like our own version of SXSW in a single weekend, and for a great cause! This event is all ages. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The festival takes place rain or shine.

"DMF is a production of the Davis Live Music Collective and is presented with the generous support of our sponsors, members, individual producers and community partners. DMF is supported, in part, by a Sacramento Foundation Arts & Culture Grant and the City of Davis."

The Folk Brothers, May 31, 2023: Remembering Brother Peter

Wed, 05/31/2023 - 11:10am | kdrtradio

Peter with dog.jpg

Today’s show honors Peter Schiffman, late co-host with Bill Wagman of The Folk Brothers. Peter died unexpectedly on Friday, May 26. Bill is away, and Rodriguez, host of KDRT program Silver Nine Volt Heart, fills in with music and warm remembrances of our friend and fellow Davis programmer.

“Peter, we’re going to miss you a lot here,” Rod says toward the end of the hour. “Thank you for your contributions to radio, particularly KDRT and also KDVS, and your love of music, and your love of live music in Davis.”

You can say many good things about Peter, including the happiness he got from his love of dogs. This love helps the show “end with a smile,” Rod says — by playing a song Peter Rowan performs about dogs, “Drop the Bone.”

Here's this week's setlist:

The print-and-online publication began in fall 2010. She took charge a few months ago, has made a few changes, and plans to make more.
