Twang Thang

Twang-Thang-farmstead-image-Yolo

George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Lucinda Willimans, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakum, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billie Jo Shaver ... Americana music didn't just show up one day — it has deep and varied country music roots. Twang Thang explores the originators, the newcomers, and the music that happened along the way!

Recurring topics include Davis activities and groups; work and life choices; philosophy and theory; plus birding, cooking, art, and other passions. Lois occasionally breaks into music — from ballads to the slack key sounds of Hawaii to golden oldies rock 'n' roll — but mostly there is just talk.

To suggest a topic for discussion or a person to interview, text Lois or leave a message in the comments here.

Rainbow City Park, live on Listening Lyrics, Sept. 13, 2024

Fri, 09/13/2024 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

RCP.jpeg

Ryan Williams, Chris O'Keefe and Dani Judith are three members of Rainbow City Park. Their love of music and exuberance of life shine in their musical output. It truly was a pleasure to get to know them.

Here's the band's story from its website: "Rainbow City Park is an indie alt-rock/dream pop band from Northern California. The band draws inspiration from 90’s alt-rock acts such as Third Eye Blind and The Smashing Pumpkins, infusing their music with a modern twist akin to the sounds of Boygenius and Snail Mail. Band members reside in both San Francisco and the Central Valley, converging in Sacramento for rehearsals.

Davisville, Sept. 9, 2024: Watching wildlife in Davis, plus listening to a voice from a previous pandemic

Mon, 09/09/2024 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Full moon above north Davis August 2022.JPG

Late summer offers a few particular attractions in Davis. The heat fades a bit, if only because the days are shorter, and evenings outdoors are mild. It’s an inviting season to look at the full moon if it’s up, and to think about another year passing. And swat some mosquitoes.

Here on Davisville, early September is a natural time to talk with someone who has spent a lot of time outdoors: Jean Jackman of Davis. She writes the “At the Pond” column in the Davis Enterprise, has taken some serious bike rides, and a quarter-century ago recorded local people talking about Davis history ("Down Home Tales of Davis"). We talk about a variety of things today, starting with the wildlife and birds she writes about in Davis. Later we hear Jean's recording of Jane Van Sant, who lived in downtown Davis, died 18 years ago at 94, and tells us in her own voice what Davis lived through during the flu epidemic of 1917-18.

The photo shows the full moon of August 2022 over north Davis.
