Album of the Week, Dec. 20, 2023: 'The Next Noel' by Ekemi

Wed, 12/20/2023 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

Ekimi.jpeg

In 1989 Jeanne and I went to a small jazz club downtown Cincinnati, where we were living at the time. We heard two University of Cincinnati students playing. The duo was called Ekimi consisting of Billy Larkin and Chris Dahlgren. I chatted with them and bought their holiday CD. Fast forward 30-plus years, and I pulled out their CD to play. I was now a 30-year resident of Davis, and I Googled those two musicians. To my surprise, Billy Larkin had moved to Davis. Chris had relocated to Berlin.

The CD still sounds fresh, especially the "Little Drummer Boy" version. Billy can be heard around the Davis area -- check out his Facebook page at Billy Larkin. Now sit back and enjoy the music and the season.

Davisville, Dec. 11, 2023: A marquee writer returns to the Enterprise

Mon, 12/11/2023 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Bruce column logo Dec 2023.jpeg

Some individuals’ work in Davis is so visible that they end up personifying their jobs. Today’s guest is one of those folks — Bruce Gallaudet, a longtime, prolific writer about sports in Davis. A former editor and sports editor of the Davis Enterprise, he has retired from the news organization twice, and recently returned for the second time. Officially, he’s now a sports correspondent for the paper.

On today’s Davisville our topics include why he’s back, how he’s working within the limits imposed by a publication that’s a fraction of its former size, and what people miss when they dismiss sports stories as uninteresting. "There's a great deal of flavor in sports," he says.
