Davisville, Nov. 25, 2024: For this year’s movie show, 2024 Derrick quotes 1974 Derrick

Mon, 11/25/2024 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Derrick Bang April 1976, photo by Jim Mitchell.jpg

This fall’s annual movie show with Derrick Bang arrives with a few extras. To note his 50 years as a movie critic, he reads — and critiques! — the first paragraph of the first movie review he wrote, in 1974 for the California Aggie at UC Davis. We also hear from a film director who worried Derrick might not like his film. Plus we get Derrick’s usual take on movies to see and avoid this holiday film season, although he could only find a few, for reasons rooted in the current ambiguous state of filmmaking. Please, have a seat. We’re pulling back the curtains.

The photo, by Jim Mitchell, shows Derrick Bang at the California Aggie in April 1976.

Rick Meagher of One Eyed Reilly has the goods on Irish music, Listening Lyrics, Nov. 22, 2024

Fri, 11/22/2024 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

R Meagher.jpeg

Listening Lyrics had a great conversation with Rick Meagher (pictured)! The blend of traditional Irish sounds and personal expression that he brings to his music with One Eyed Reilly is special. It’s always exciting to hear from someone so passionate about their craft, especially in a genre as rich and storied as Irish music. Rick shared some insights into the band's approach to Irish folk in his original compositions.

One Eyed Reilly blends well-crafted original songs with modern Celtic rock, Americana, and wildly energetic, occasionally over-caffeinated versions of traditional Irish classics but even more so the original songs this band generates. Live performances are a whirlwind of Irish-themed originals, with a cheeky sprinkle of covers by Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, and even the odd bit of Bob Dylan or the Grateful Dead—because why not throw some rootsy rock in with your pint of Guinness? It’s like an Irish pub jam session with a rock 'n' roll attitude—just with more fiddles and less actual eye-patches than you’d expect!

A legend moves on

Thu, 11/21/2024 - 12:56pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

jeffandlucas.JPG

Here at Davis Media Access (DMA), we’ve just said goodbye to a true helper, someone who has fundamentally shaped the course of this organization and by extension, this community, for the past 25 years.

Jeff Shaw departed this month for a new job managing government access television for the City of Piedmont and netted a really short commute from his home in Berkeley. While they say no one is irreplaceable and I believe that to be true, Jeff is much beloved and it’s a tough goodbye.

As production manager for DMA, Jeff was instrumental in helping to build partnerships here in Davis and throughout Yolo County. Thanks in large part to his efforts, our alliances with the Davis Joint Unified School District, City of Davis, Woodland Community College, and dozens of community-based groups throughout Yolo County have blossomed and grown. He's guided dozens of high school and college students through internships.

Most notably, Jeff is the main reason KDRT came into being. In 2000, he approached the leadership of what was then called Davis Community Television to say there was an opportunity to start a low-power FM ( a special class of non-commercial educational radio) station for Davis, and would they consider it. Fast forward four years and a ton of work, and KDRT launched Sept. 24, 2004. In the intervening years, Jeff advised and assisted dozens of others to secure licenses and launch stations.
