Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live on the first, third and occasional fifth Friday of the month.

Live Friday 11am-1pm
Replays Sunday 9-11am

IMPLOSION

IMPLOSION graphic

IMPLOSION is hosted by Nick Saloman, front person of The Bevis Frond. Born and raised in London, England, Nick started buying records as a small child in the late 1950s and began going to gigs and playing in bands as a teen in the late 60s. IMPLOSION is simply an hour of Nick playing the music that he loves (psychedelia, rock, folk, beat, jazz, soul, punk, and more), with a bit of chat thrown in for good measure. Nick says: "If I like it, then there have got to be a few other people who will too.

Live Wednesday 8-9pm
Replays Friday 8-9am, Sunday 5-6pm

Davisville, Oct. 28, 2024: Founder of Davis nonprofit Sahaya believes in local knowledge, trust and ripples

Mon, 10/28/2024 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Koen Van Rompay of Sahaya at KDRT October 2024.JPG

Sahaya International, a Davis nonprofit, took shape after a chance meeting when founder Dr. Koen Van Rompay (pictured), a researcher at UC Davis, was in India for an AIDS conference. Since then Sahaya has grown into a group of friends and donors, many in Davis, who give money to help people in developing countries by relying on local knowledge, trust, and long-term connections.

Sahaya celebrates its 25th anniversary at Veterans Memorial Theater on Nov. 2. Today on Davisville we talk with Van Rompay about how Sahaya began, what it does, and how it operates. Sahaya’s tax return says they raised and gave away about $830,000 in 2023.

“There’s much that we can do if we just join hands together, especially if you find people you trust,” he said. He’s just as happy if Sahaya’s work inspires people to do something useful outside the charity, “close to their heart,” on their own — the ripple effect.

Mariam Diakite and Erich Huffaker of Orchestra Gold, on Listening Lyrics, Oct. 18, 2024

Fri, 10/18/2024 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

OC.jpeg

Mariam Diakite and Erich Huffaker of Orchestra Gold joined us in the studio (photo by Jeff Shaw) this week, treating us to a live song and some insights into their music.

The word "fusion" is not used in the sound of this amazing Bay Area band. But psychedelic, rock, brass and masterful guitar work does make a wonderful fusion with Malian music.

From its website: "Orchestra Gold's vibrant sound is spearheaded by the dynamic Mariam Diakite, whose raw, hypnotic vocals deliver heartfelt and thought-provoking lyrics in the highly symbolic Bambara language. While paying homage to Malian musical traditions, this fierce new sound thrives with heavy swinging rhythms, a funky fresh brass section, and cosmic guitar licks. With the January 2023 release of their third album, Medicine, this profoundly spiritual and dance-inducing ensemble continues their pursuit of spreading healing and community through the universal gift of music." Mariam also has dance moves. If you're into dancing, check it out.
