2024-KDRT-On-Air-week-TY.jpg

On behalf of all of us at KDRT and Davis Media Access, thank you for listening, supporting, and attending our events during last week's On-Air fundraiser.  As a "volunteer-powered" grassroots station, we depend on the support we receive from our community, and last week was a record-breaker! We're also grateful to our friends at Armadillo Music, Davis Odd Fellows Hall, Blue Note Brewing, and Davis Manor Winter Bazaar for having us, and to the musicians who brought the live music - Alex Roth, Green Grass Snakes, the 410s, and Dave Nachmanoff.  In case you missed it, there is still time to support our community radio at kdrt.org/donate

Davisville, Dec. 9, 2024: What would make transit genuinely attractive? The search is underway

Mon, 12/09/2024 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Aboard a Capitol Corridor train 120424.JPG

Today we talk about a post-pandemic effort to figure out, seriously, what would make public transit more attractive to more Californians, so that more of us actually use it.

Our guest is Kari Watkins, co-director of the Transit Research Center and associate professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California at Davis. She’s a member of a state committee you probably don’t know about — the Transit Transformation Task Force, which has the job of figuring out how to seriously accelerate Californians’ use of transit.

Al Vasquez and Bill Edwards on Listening Lyrics, Dec. 6, 2024

Fri, 12/06/2024 - 5:01pm | Pieter Pastoor

Al and Bill.jpeg

Prepare to be blown away by two of the most talented and inspiring musicians to grace our studio. Al Vasquez, a master percussionist and vocalist, joined forces with the legendary Bill Edwards on guitar.

Despite some minor technical difficulties at the start, their raw talent and passion shone through in every note. As I sat there, surrounded by the electric energy of their live performance, I felt like I was transported into a recording studio. Their musical chemistry was undeniable, and I was honored to witness it firsthand. But enough from me, let their music speak for itself as you listen to the show.

Al will be gracing our local venues soon, so mark your calendars. On December 28, catch his quartet at Davis Wine Bar. And on January 25, don't miss his performance at the Winters Opera House alongside the incredible Dave Nachmanoff. Don't miss this opportunity to experience pure musical talent at its finest. Trust me, this hour will be a gift to your senses. So be swept away by the captivating performances you will witness.

SF Press Club honors KDRT programs Timeout Radio, Davisville

Thu, 12/05/2024 - 3:56pm | kdrtradio

Rohan Baxi, left, at Berkeley; Bill Buchanan.png

We're fundraising this week to support programs like these. If you can help, please go to KDRT.org/donate. Thank you!

Three episodes of local programs created for Davis community radio station KDRT — two about sports, and one about the aftermath of a traumatic week in Davis — were honored Wednesday in the San Francisco Press Club’s 47th annual Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards.

Rohan Baxi (in left photo, at UC Berkeley), who graduated from Da Vinci High School in June and now attends the University of California at Berkeley, won second and third place in the noncommercial radio/podcast Sports Feature category for episodes titled “Fair Play,” about women’s sports and pay disparity from June 2024, and ”Rowing Stronger,” from July 2024.

Bill Buchanan (right photo, at the awards) placed second among noncommercial public affairs programs with small staffs for “Integrating a traumatic week into Davis,” an interview with Susan Cosio following three violent assaults, including two fatalities, in spring 2023. Cosio, a retired hospital chaplain, pastor and longtime resident of Davis, has spent most of her life helping people navigate crises. This episode also won a Hometown Media Award from the Foundation for the Alliance for Community Media this summer.
