austin James Hicks vists KDRT

Back for a second time is Austin James Hicks. Born in Berkeley, CA.he has been playing guitar since he was 8 and singing since 10. Why does he do this? To him its simple but he is still searching for the right words.

"I guess because music is sort of everything. Not everything in sense of it being all I want to do but simply that it sort of feels like it's interwoven so tightly in all aspects of my life that it almost feels silly to talk about it as if it were separate from anything else I do. I like to think that everyone has that in some way with something. But if I were to break it down to simply the act of writing, playing, and performing, it's both what is getting me through this crazy life and what makes this crazy life worth getting through."- from an interview with Federica Buonsante for The Babel Harbinger.

Davisville, Feb. 13, 2017: Davis Hunts Sweet Spot for its Budding Marijuana Law

Mon, 02/13/2017 - 7:55pm | Bill Buchanan

barometer.jpg

Davis is calmly (at least so far) going about the business of creating a city marijuana law, now that Proposition 64 has legalized recreational use of pot in California. The state ballot measure gave Davis, like every town in the state, several choices: Allow growing outdoors? Do you permit retail marijuana shops, and if so where? What about enforcement? How will all this synchronize with what the county, state and federal governments opt to do? On today’s show, Davis City Manager Dirk Brazil and Chief Innovation Officer Diane Parro talk about the current status, decisions facing Davis, what other cities are doing, and developments to date, including comments from the first “community conversation” this month.

Jack Symes & Nat Lefkoff vist KDRT

Jack Symes is a singer-songwriter from the LA area but has been living in and performing around the Bay for the last 5 years. A solo act, his music embodies a folky, relaxed tone packed with emotional lyrics and a shaky moustache. Symes recently released his debut EP titled “Gargoyles” and is now out on a 3-month long West Coast tour through April.

Nat Lefkoff: Born and raised in Davis, California, Nat has since toured up and down the West Coast throughout his high school and college careers with a variety of groups and venues. Nat focuses heavily on lyrics and melody as he composes with the goal of creating music that speaks to the experience of being human as we interact with the changing worlds around us.

For those outside the listening area the show will stream live on www.kdrt.org.

Davisville, Jan. 30, 2017: Bad Storms, Mostly Friendly Folks, 6,000 Calories a Day, and Other Tales From Biking 66 While 66

Mon, 01/30/2017 - 6:45pm | Bill Buchanan

DougW in Chicago.jpg

In 2005 Doug Waterman, a retired teacher who lives in Davis, rode his bike solo from Santa Monica to Chicago on Route 66. He also was 66 at the time. A decade later, he has written a book about the trip—“It Only Hurts When I Sit Down: A Bicycle Adventure on Historic Route 66”—and he appears on Davisville today to talk about what he saw along the way. He is joined by his wife Donna, who wrote nightly emails for their friends and family. His recollections include tales of good deeds and usually friendly folks, ghost towns, storms he barely outran, odd moments, and a truck tire he saw explode on the road.
