Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live on the first, third and occasional fifth Friday of the month.

Davisville, Dec. 2, 2019: Helping kids grow up

Mon, 12/02/2019 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Gemma Miner Nov 2019.jpg

Helping kids grow up well is a challenge that doesn't end. The question occupies parents, teachers, maybe almost everyone, and we address the subject today, not in a broad policy sense, but through one conversation with one person engaged in the work. Gemma Miner, the academic coordinator for volunteer engagement for the California 4-H, has 33 years of working with youth to help them develop confidence, leadership and life skills, plus degrees in recreation and experience as a pediatric registered nurse. We talk about the 4-H program (the photo shows her with some of her materials), what kids and youths need, how to reach them, what not to do, and how adults can make their experiences interesting to a child.

Join Us on Dec. 3 for the Davis City Council Meeting Proclamation Ceremony, and on Dec. 5 at Odd Fellows Hall for Annual Thursday Live! Holiday Show

Sun, 12/01/2019 - 3:07pm | Diane Crumley

Davis-Odd-Fellows-Hall-Dec2019 (2).jpg

You are invited to join us at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Davis City Hall (23 Russell Blvd.), before the Davis City Council meeting, as we gather to celebrate the 6:30 p.m. proclamation presentation in honor of KDRT's 15th anniversary. We are very grateful for this ongoing collaboration between our many volunteers and our listener community.

And then two days later, KDRT will attend (and record) the annual Thursday Live! Holiday Show 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the Davis Odd Fellows Hall. It's always a festive event, and many people stop by after attending the Downtown Davis Holiday Open House and Candlelight Parade that same evening. The show features the "Odd Star Band" - the talented "house band" that brought you "Summer  of Love" and "The British Invasion" concerts not long ago.

Meraki Radio Honors the Passing of Francis Resta - WWII Combat Veteran, PTSD Advocate, KDRT Co-Host, and More

Sat, 11/23/2019 - 12:55pm | Diane Crumley

The Nov. 22, 2019 episode of Meraki Radio is a special tribute to the life and wisdom of Francis Resta, a remarkable individual whom the KDRT community was fortunate to engage with during his weekly co-host activities on Alison B's show. He died on Oct. 31. "In this 1-hour special," Alison says, "Meraki Radio pays tribute to our late friend and co-host. Carol, his wife, takes his seat in the studio, and visitors from the community share their thoughts. Bill Buchanan, Jeff Shaw, Michael Gangitano, Kate, and Alison B share perspectives, while Carol informs the conversation from Francis's angle. He will be missed forever, but will live on through all the lives he touched throughout his long life." Bill, host of  KDRT's "Davisville," speaks of admiring Francis' ability to talk about difficult combat-related topics. He interviewed Francis for "Davisville" in 2018, and the San Francisco Press Club recently awarded the episode first-place among public affairs shows (staff of 1 to 4) on non-commercial radio in the club's annual "excellence in journalism" competition.

Davisville, Nov. 18, 2019: Streaming, theaters, and fall movies with Davis critic Derrick Bang

Mon, 11/18/2019 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Derrick Bang 111619.jpg

Today I welcome back Derrick Bang for our ninth annual talk about movies. This time we cover streaming, the increased supply of films, the appeal of watching a good movie with hundreds of others in a large theater, six movies he’s looking forward to this holiday season, and three he isn’t – including Playmobil: The Movie and a remake of the 1974 slasher film Black Christmas. An entertaining critic who’s as comfortable skewering a turkey as he is appraising a masterpiece or waving away a mediocrity, Derrick writes reviews for the Davis Enterprise and his blog Derrick Bang on Film.

Live Tracks Highlights a Decade of Thursday Live! Recordings - Part 1

Thu, 11/14/2019 - 9:10pm | Jim Buchanan

2019-Rootstock-Live-Tracks-11-18.jpg

This week, Live Tracks focuses almost entirely on Yolo County bands, from shows recorded during the monthly Thursday Live! concert series at the Davis Odd Fellows Hall. In November 2009, Jim recorded his first Thursday Live! concert, with the Rita Hosking Trio, and the rest is history -- at an average of 9 shows per year, the total exceeds 90 two-hour concerts recorded, mixed, and broadcast on KDRT Thursday evenings during Live Tracks. This week's episode covers a lot of ground, and samples popular local bands such as The Cups, Rita Hosking Trio, The Muddy Waders, the legendary Clarence Van Hook with Cedar Seeger, The West Nile Ramblers, Bonanza King, The Davis "Odd Stars" from the 2018 British Invasion Concert, the Golden Cadillacs, and a special recording of Mumbo Gumbo from the November 2018 Fire Relief Benefit.
