The focus is on traditional and current folk music, Americana, and bluegrass, with Celtic, Nordic, and Spanish infusions — wherever Karen's travels and interests take her. In addition, the music of contra dance, an American Folk tradition that came with English and other settlers, will often be threaded through the hour. Don’t know it? Check it out.

One Foundation: Curating Around Reggae

Wed, 11/29/2017 - 1:54pm | B. Hold

One Foundation, Wednesdays 4-5pm on KDRT

November 17, 2017

As Cam and I have been getting ready to start our program, One Foundation, people have been asking us, "So is this a reggae show?" Our answer: No and Yes.

No, in the sense that we'll be playing a wide variety of musical styles from around the globe, especially from the Caribbean, Latin America, and the diasporas of those regions throughout the world. Reggae might be the majority of what we play, but you could say we're "hardly strictly reggae."

Album of the Week for 11/29/2017 is "Nebraska" by Bruce Springsteen

Wed, 11/29/2017 - 8:27am | Matt Blake

Bruce_Springsteen_-_Nebraska.jpg

Album art

Do you like loney? Do you like spare?

Join me as we listen to an album of what were recorded as demos at home by Bruce on a 4 track. It's just acoustic guitar, harmonica, and Bruce singing about the evil in this world. It is the perfect mid-winter album, but I'm doing it early because, well, it's getting dark far too early every day. And at least one person dies in almost every song; eleven in the opening track!

We'll be listening to a reissued vinyl that was released specifically for Record Store Day a couple of years ago that I picked-up at Armadillo. I look forward to you joining me.

Mon, 11/27/2017 - 6:05pm | Bill Buchanan

Anne Hance.jpg

If you’re interested in Davis, then Anne Hance is someone you should know, or at least know about. A zoologist by training, she grew up in England during World War II, came to Davis in 1968, co-founded and helped lead the Explorit Science Center for a third of a century … and those details are just part of the story. We talk about those topics, and much more, on today’s program.

Davisville, Nov. 13, 2017: Our yearly guide to films with Davis critic Derrick Bang

Mon, 11/13/2017 - 6:05pm | Bill Buchanan

Derricks blog.png

Today I welcome back Davis movie critic Derrick Bang, who offers his entertaining opinions on films to see and avoid as 2017 winds down. This show is an annual feature on Davisville. The New York Times recently posted a list of about 100 films coming out in the next two months.  Seeing them all would take, what, about five weeks of full-time effort? This is why we need movie critics, to help sort 'em all out!
