Recurring topics include Davis activities and groups; work and life choices; philosophy and theory; plus birding, cooking, art, and other passions. Lois occasionally breaks into music — from ballads to the slack key sounds of Hawaii to golden oldies rock 'n' roll — but mostly there is just talk.

We also hear from Wendi Counta, Executive Director of Progress Ranch, which operates two group homes for boys here in Davis. We'll learn  how they are weathering the storm, and also ways the community can help the carry out their mission. Supervisor Sandy talked a bit about the importance of testing and contact tracing as an integral part of the County's longterm strategy for progressing through the stages of re-opening. Training for contact tracing continues. The discussion also addressed how the City of Woodland was doing and highlighted the large percentage of "Mom and Pop" businesses that keep Woodland vibrant, and how difficult the last two months have been, while so many are working hard to re-invent the way they provide services.

KDRT-fb-COVID-19-Dan-Carson-Episode-17 (2).jpg

It's no secret that municipalities will be among those hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, as revenues from several major sources dry up or slow to a trickle. My guest on Tuesday's show is Davis City Councilmember Dan Carson. Elected to the Council in 2018 and currently serving his first term, Dan ran on a platform of being real about finances and financial realities. We talk about the challenges the City faces, and get his insights into the process.  For more information the City of Davis has launched a new webpage regarding COVID-19 related responses and conditions. The show airs live at noon on KDRT 95.7 FM and kdrt.org. #communityradio #communitymedia #municipalfinance #lifeinthetimeofcovid #DavisCA #YoloCounty

Davisville, May 11, 2020: Working in the Co-op during the pandemic

Mon, 05/11/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Inside the Co-op 051020.jpg

The Covid-19 pandemic has closed or curtailed most stores, with the Davis Food Co-op and other grocers among the few exceptions. So what has it been like to work in the Co-op during the pandemic? Has the experience changed as shoppers adjusted to new conditions, are there insights here as other Davis stores prepare to re-open, and why are flour and toilet paper rarely on the shelves?

My guests today are two employees of the Co-op: Madison Suoja, the co-op’s education and outreach specialist, and Laura Sanchez, the store’s operations manager. A few items from the interview: Sales for the second quarter are up almost 11 percent from a year ago, shoppers are buying significantly more items per trip (and lately, making fewer trips), and the Co-op just started offering online shopping, with curbside pickup.

The impacts of COVID-19 sharply impact cities, and still there are things like municipal measures (such as MeasureJ/R)  and local elections to consider. We talk about that and more with Davis Mayor Brett Lee.  Today's conversation included an overview of how the pandemic is impacting the city's budget as it prepares for a new fiscal year starting July 1, 2020.  We also heard from Jessica Hubbard of Yolo Community Foundation about this week's local giving program #BDOG2020 for the Big Day of Giving, which is this Thursday, May 7, and the foundation's donor engagement program.  The Yolo Community Foundation is spearheading an effort to raise awareness and funding for our region's hard-working nonprofit organizations with the Yolo COVID-19 Relief Initiative.  This initiative is made possible through the partnerships with Yolo County and the cities of Davis, West Sacramento, Winters and Woodland.
