Roots, Shoots and Leaves

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. And if you listen long enough, you may experience some musical enlightenment.

Live Tuesday 6-8pm
Replays Saturday 7-9pm
DJ(s):
Tree Kilpatrick

That's Life

Lois Richter’s format for That’s Life is mostly interviews. Recurring topics include Davis activities and groups; work and life choices; philosophy and theory; plus birding, cooking, art, and other passions. Lois occasionally breaks into music — from ballads to the slack key sounds of Hawaii to golden oldies rock 'n' roll — but mostly there is just talk.

To suggest a topic for discussion or a person to interview, text Lois or leave a message in the comments here.

Live Tuesday 12-1pm

This week's guests include Michael Bisch, executive director of the Yolo Food Bank and Natalie Nelson, executive director of the Pence Gallery in downtown Davis.

Tasked with the mission of reducing food insecurity in our county, the Yolo Food Bank has been distributing 60,000 meals per month. Michael talks about bringing food security to Davis during the pandemic, including partnerships with local college campuses and the Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter.  When asked what he is most grateful for he replied  "The 181 volunteer residents of Davis that are assisting their neighbors countywide, and the many food donors including local farmers, grocers and more".  There are still openings for volunteering to sort, pack, deliver and hand-out meal kits. Link to their website for additional information to volunteer.

Alex Jordan is More Than a Subtle Musician: the Interview, Friday, October 2, 2020

Thu, 10/01/2020 - 11:06am | Pieter Pastoor

IMG_0009.JPG

Alex Jordan was born to music, playing first trumpet, then bass, then guitar—and always singing.  His musical influences ranged from jazz to musical theatre.  He studied his father’s extensive CD collection, in particular the Grateful Dead section, which considerably expanded his perception of what was music.  Listening to a live album, he had a revelation when he heard a passage in which silence was clearly part of the music. “It was quantifiably, certifiably, distinctly music, and it was dead silence. I’d never heard anything like that.  I don’t know that I became a Deadhead at that moment, but I sure got it.”

My guests this week are  Jesse Salinas,  Assessor/Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters for Yolo County, and artist and community organizer NJ Mvondo, to speak about the new Healing Art Project unfolding in Davis.

Jesse's office  is responsible for multiple key functions within Yolo County, but for this show,  we’ll focus on his role as registrar of voters. Jesse’s team has been very busy getting out information about the changes to voting during the Nov. 3 election cycle, and I'm delighted to speak with him and get fully up to speed on what we need to know here in Yolo County.

Davisville, Sept. 28, 2020: Davis housing, 6 months into the pandemic

Mon, 09/28/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

unusual sign for fall, 2020.jpg

On today’s Davisville we talk with Steve and Kit Boschken, Davis real estate experts and the owners of Boschken Properties, about the housing market in Davis this fall. Today's topics follow up our talk with Steve Boschken last May, and include apartment vacancies, the thin supply of homes for sale, rising home prices, the pandemic, unhealthy air from the wildfires, rents, buyers, trends, interest rates, lasting impacts, and not knowing when students will be able to resume in-person classes at UC Davis. Almost all UC Davis classes this fall are online, and could stay that way through the rest of the academic year.

Davis Media Access (DMA) is pleased to announce that one of its youth participants has been selected as a finalist in the national Points of Light Foundation’s Youth Summit Pitch Contest, held Aug. 19, 2020.  The Summit brought together youth aged 13-18 from across the country to reflect on the challenges and opportunities presented by the new school year and the “new normal” during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Rohan Baxi, a 9th grade student from Da Vinci Junior High in Davis, CA pitched his project idea, “Timeout Radio: Building Teen Connection in a Time of Distance,” to the Foundation, and was selected as one of 10 finalists. The recognition comes with a $1,000 award to help further his project.

Jazz After Dark September 22 2020

Tue, 09/22/2020 - 6:34pm | Don Shor

Duke_Ellington.jpg

Coming up tonight on Jazz After Dark.

Tonight’s program is dedicated to Stanley Crouch, legendary jazz critic who died September 16, 2020, at the age of 74. He wrote for the New York Daily News and the Village Voice, collaborated with Ken Burns on his Jazz mini-series documentary, and co-founded Jazz at the Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis.

We’ll hear from three jazz artists that he respected:

Duke Ellington (shown above), who Crouch described as “the greatest of all jazz musicians” in his column Duke Ellington: Artist of the Century from December 1, 1999.

Charlie Parker: Crouch wrote Kansas City Lightning: the Rise and Times of Charlie Parker over a thirty year period. He described Parker as “the self-made creator of a vital and breathtakingly structured jazz vernacular and an anarchic man of dooming appetites.”

COVID-19 Community Report Episode 36: A Visit With UC Davis Chancellor Gary May - Sep 22nd, 2020

Tue, 09/22/2020 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-guest-chancellor-gary-may-portrait-ucd.jpg

Today''s guest is UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May, who happens to be the most-requested interview from a poll of community members asked to suggest future guests. Some 24,000 UC Davis students are expected to be living here for the fall quarter, which starts Sept. 28, with the vast majority living in apartments and single-family homes in Davis and surrounding cities. What impact will this have on our COVID-19 numbers? How is the university managing its approach to COVID?
