Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live on the first, third and occasional fifth Friday of the month.

Live Friday 11am-1pm
Replays Sunday 9-11am

COVID-19 Community Report, April 20, 2021: Voices of the Pandemic

Tue, 04/20/2021 - 3:10pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-Summary-slide-3x3-sq-wht (2).jpg

Since launching this show on March 17, 2020 I’ve interviewed just shy of 100 people representing a breadth of experiences across Yolo County. We’ve heard from elected officials ranging from Congress to school board; from Yolo County’s public health staff, and from teachers, students, and parents. I’ve interviewed artists and musicians; journalists, businesses, and nonprofit leaders. I’ve focused on the science, interviewing epidemiologists, virologists, and hospital administrators. We’ve talked about mental health, homelessness, hopelessness, and resiliency. And through it all, I’ve tried to illustrate that the pandemic has meant many things to many people, and to highlight the ways it has illuminated the holes in our safety net, and the extra burdens borne by marginalized communities. Today I’ve pulled out what I thought were particularly poignant passages from the past 13 months.

Davis Garden Show, April 15, 2021 -- Tomatoes part 2

Thu, 04/15/2021 - 12:00pm | Don Shor

WildBoarTomatoesasstd.jpg

For another week, most of today's Davis Garden Show focuses on TOMATOES! This is the second of a four-part, in-depth discussion about tomatoes -- info applicable wherever you grow them. But we also answer some listener questions and talk about other things: "volunteer" melon-squash-cucumber seedlings (mostly inedible crosses), what ripens AFTER you pick it?, Gesnariads including African Violets (there's a related garden club in Sac), the foibles of podcasting the Davis Garden Show, and other tidbits. Join Don Shor and Lois Richter for another lively discussion.

Don't forget that you can send YOUR questions/comments/brags to DavisGardenShow@gmail.com

Album of the Week, April 14, 2021: Live from Lockdown with Rita Hosking and Sean Feder

Wed, 04/14/2021 - 5:10pm | Danny

Screenshot 2021-04-14-Live-from-Lockdown-Rita-Sean-guitars (2).jpg

On Jan. 29, 2021, The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley hosted Rita Hosking and Sean Feder for a livestream concert. Soon after receiving the audio tracks, they, with Conrad Sisk and Steve O'Neill, released the concert as “Live from Lockdown," available as a CD or download. Their daughters, Hava Feder and Kora Feder, illustrated and designed the album cover.

Rita's father, originally from the mountains in Northern California, worked the night shift at a sawmill as a part of the area’s logging industry. Her great-grandfather, from Cornwall, England, was an underground gold miner in the region. The stories of her family and upbringing find their way into Rita’s songs on this album.

Davis Music Connections, April 13, 2021: Continuing local tributes for Women's History Month and remembering Cathy Speck

Tue, 04/13/2021 - 3:00pm | Ned

ad-04-13-2021.jpg

In this episode Ned and Clyde "celebrate" their 55th pandemic show produced from home in their typical upbeat, humorous, and slightly irreverent style. Additionally, they continue their highlighting of women musicians for Women's History Month (extended) and honor the passing of Davis' good cheer ambassador Cathy Speck.  In his Davis Enterprise column of Sunday,  April 11, 2021 Bob Dunning wrote a beautiful tribute to Cathy Speck, which said, in part, "Put simply, Cathy Speck is one of the greatest human beings God ever put on this Earth.  She taught us love and compassion and true friendship".  Ned and Clyde provide a tribute to end their show,  and add that Cathy taught them strength and courage, as she spent her life promoting understanding, love, and acceptance, while working tirelessly for those who were discriminated against for being different.

COVID-19 Community Report, April 13, 2021: Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor

Tue, 04/13/2021 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19 - Don-Saylor-041321.jpg

As I am winding down this series (last show airs April 27), I wanted to circle back with someone at the county level, and I chose Don Saylor, whom I last interviewed in June 2020.

Supervisor Saylor represents District 2, including the cities of Davis and Winters, the campus of the University of California at Davis, and the farm land of southwestern Yolo County. His public service career spans over 45 years and includes 25 years elected in office, administrative, planning and analytical positions in local government and both the legislative and executive branches of California state government.
