IMPLOSION

IMPLOSION graphic

IMPLOSION is hosted by Nick Saloman, front person of The Bevis Frond. Born and raised in London, England, Nick started buying records as a small child in the late 1950s and began going to gigs and playing in bands as a teen in the late 60s. IMPLOSION is simply an hour of Nick playing the music that he loves (psychedelia, rock, folk, beat, jazz, soul, punk, and more), with a bit of chat thrown in for good measure. Nick says: "If I like it, then there have got to be a few other people who will too.

Davisville, Dec. 27, 2021: ‘Carol’ is more than an ornament, plus prospects for more theater in Davis

Mon, 12/27/2021 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Christmas Carol horizontal.JPG

Few things created in 1843 are still relevant, but A Christmas Carol still is. One of the lasting versions of Charles Dickens’ classic story is the adaptation that today’s guest, Richard Hellesen, wrote for the Sacramento Theatre Co. in 1987. Its latest run wrapped up this month. Today we talk with Richard about what he calls the “pure luck” that landed him the offer to write the play, why Carol is timely, and why & how Davis could become more of a regional center for live theater. UC Davis, where Richard studied, is a catalyst.

OIP.sd2R7bSRToyUq8z1jWkJAAHaHa.jpeg

It's that time again when Brother Bill drags out (just a small fraction of) his collection of cheezy holiday tracks, including ones by The Three Weissmen, The Yid Kids, Jimmy Sabata, as well as Percy Dovetonsils (who was one of Ernie Kovacs' alter egos). We are off next week and back live on Jan. 5. Happy holidays!

Screen Shot 2021-12-21 at 8.27.38 AM.png

We’re now at that special time of year when many of us celebrate holidays during the Winter Solstice, such as Yule and Christmas. Our homes feature candles, mistletoe, holly or pines creating a close connection with the natural world.

The playlist on this week’s Celtic Songlines features artists who celebrate this season through their music, to help us pause and allow us to contemplate our connection with life on this earth and with each other.

Tune in for Loreena McKennitt, Ashley Davis with John Doyle, The Gothard Sisters, Kate Rusby, The Chieftains, John Fitzpatrick, Al Petteway with Amy White, Maggie Sansome and Bonnie Rideout, and Libana.

The Folk Brothers for Dec. 15, 2021: Go Your Way

Wed, 12/15/2021 - 11:10am | Peter Schiffman

OIP.qi4ao1_9JDQYqkzQtnXfSwAAAA.jpeg

After nearly 15 years, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have reunited for their second duo album -- Raise The Roof -- on which they cover Anne Brigg's "Go Your Way." Briggs, a key figure in the 1960s British folk revival, recorded only three albums and an EP before calling it a day in 1973. But she had an outsized influence on singers like June Tabor, Maddy Prior, Sandy Denny, and Richard Thompson -- who penned "Beeswing" with Briggs in mind.

Also on today's show: new tracks from Jake Xerxes Fussell, Christy Moore, The Spell Song Project, Paul Kelly and Grant Peoples.
