To Now features local, regional, and small touring bands throughout California while highlighting the history and culture of California musicians, venues, teachers, recording studios, promoters, festivals, and general resources that enrich our community.

In the Key of Folk

In the Key of Folk with Karen Leyse offers music that will keep you humming or dancing along — perhaps both! The focus is on traditional and current folk music, Americana, and bluegrass, with Celtic, Nordic, and Spanish infusions — wherever Karen's travels and interests take her. In addition, the music of contra dance, an American Folk tradition that came with English and other settlers, will often be threaded through the hour. Don’t know it? Check it out.

Classical Excursions

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Some 30 years ago, while sitting in Sudwerk listening to a young singer on a stool performing popular songs of the day, my companion -- Bill Morrissey, who had mostly done original songs at his Palms' gig earlier that evening -- turned to me and said, "When I was starting out, I did lots of covers too, but never with an Ovation guitar!"

Singer-songwriters, like Bill, often include a cover or two in their sets. A good cover song should seem fresh, almost as if the singer owned the song. On today's show, I included a few instructive examples: Joel Rafael covering Woody Guthrie, Valerie June covering John Prine, and Stan Rogers (pictured) covering Mary McCaslin.

The night sky is one of the best parts of Davis during summer and early fall. Hot days yield to mild evenings that make it easy to spend time outdoors after sunset, and a bright moon on the horizon can feel elemental, inviting thoughts about subjects that go far beyond the daily routine.

On today’s program Vinita Domier from the Davis Astronomy Club talks about the attractions of the night sky. With the James Webb space telescope, humans can now see farther in space than ever. We also we hear from stargazers at two recent nighttime events where the club's members brought out their telescopes: one event in the Explorit Science Center parking lot, and the other at a Yolo Basin Foundation benefit held one Saturday night deep in the Yolo Bypass.

Asking someone to select their top 20 songs is difficult, and picking just one is impossible. But that's what we have today: one favorite song from each of several people, along with the reasons it's their favorite. I left the genres open.

Music is a mystery that touches us on so many levels at so many different times. It can make us happy, sad, or melancholy. Or maybe we're drawn to the music itself, or to the lyrics; or for many of us a song offers a look back in time that allows us to relive a past moment.

For a special edition of Silver Nine Volt Heart, Rodriguez digs into his archives from The Golden Road (the Grateful Dead-based show he hosted on KDRT for a decade) to celebrate Jerry's 80th birthday and the annual tradition, the "Days Between." The Ol' Maestro was born on Aug. 1, 1942 and checked out on Aug. 9, 1995. Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be here ... for sure!

Enjoy the two hours of cool sounds + words by Jerry all lined up for a nice fat trip on the airwaves. There will be plenty of the good ol' GD, tunes by the Jerry Garcia Band, acoustic stoke with Garcia & Grisman, a couple of recorded interviews with Jerry, and much more.

The Folk Brothers for Aug. 3, 2022: Remembering Mick Moloney

If there is such a thing as a "renaissance man" in 21st century culture, then Mick Moloney fit that description. Moloney, who died last week at his home in Greenwich Village, was a New York University professor, a touring and recording musician, an Irish cultural ambassador, an ethnomusicologist, and a lifelong social justice warrior.

From his work with The Johnstons, Green Fields of America, and his musical collaborations with Robbie O'Connell, Jimmy Keane, Athena Tergis, John Doyle, and many, many other Irish and American artists, Mick Moloney has left a legacy of recordings that will stand the test of time. The Folk Brothers toured Ireland with Mick, and Bill had been in Galicia with Mick just a few weeks before his untimely death.
