Davisville, Aug. 22, 2016: From the Desert, to the Byrds, to a Concert in Davis (part 1)

Mon, 08/22/2016 - 6:05pm | Bill Buchanan

David Hayes and Gene Parsons, 111415, edited.jpg

Gene Parsons, son of a classical pianist, grew up in the Mojave desert, practicing banjo and guitar in an empty 10,000-gallon water tank on his father’s homesteaded ranch. One day, as a teenager playing banjo in a music shop, he was invited to join a recording session by Gib Guilbeau—a Cajun fiddle player who would later play with Parsons in at least three bands. The experience set Parsons on a path that led to him playing in The Byrds from 1968 to 1972. On Sept. 10 he joins David Hayes, an equally accomplished musician, in concert at the Davis Odd Fellows Hall (that's Hayes on the left in the photo, with Parsons), and today we present the first of a two-part interview with Parsons (here's part 2). The conversation includes memories of fellow Byrd Clarence White, Gram Parsons, and Sneaky Pete Kleinow; his songs Gunga Din and Yesterday's Train; and the “oddball story” about how a kid who had wanted to play fiddle grew up to play drums for one of the top bands of the 1960s, contributing to its revival after most of its original members had left.

Gary Chew: Third Streaming (Friday 8/19)

Fri, 08/19/2016 - 9:10am | Eunah

gary chew third streaming

Music from Bernstein's West Side Story and On The Town, Jane Ira Bloom's More Than Sinatra, plus Sinatra singing Lonely Town -- that's just part of this week's program on Gary Chew: 3rd Streaming. Other great stuff includes a beautiful composition never recorded until now, written by Johnny Mandel called THE MOON SONG played by just 2 dudes: Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny. Eddie Daniels will blow you away performing Jorge Callendrelli's CONCERTO FOR JAZZ CLARINET & ORCHESTRA. And for plenty good measure really turn up your headphones for a chamber trio by Claude Debussy. Then, Gary replays a track he recently programmed featuring Diana Krall singing CALIFORNIA DREAMING. Who her back-up singers are on this session will stoke you. All this might be more than you can handle in only 58 minutes of KDRT radio time. Check it out at 3pm Friday, 10pm this Saturday, or at 1pm the following Wednesday afternoon on 95.7 or streaming at www.kdrt.org. It’s ALL music to your ears … totally.

Nancy Northrup visits Listening Lyrics Friday August 19, 2016 at 4:00PM

Nancy Northrup visits KDRT

Singer-songwriter Nancy Northrup has been greatly influenced through the years by her country, gospel, and folk roots in Kentucky and Tennessee. Her Kentucky relatives were on the gospel circuit throughout the south as founders of The Edmonton Quartet. Nancy spent each summer traveling with them as they sang at gospel music events throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. They would pull a very young, wide-eyed little girl onto the stage in front of thousands of people to sing some old time gospel...and that little girl's life was changed forever. Nancy is also related to the founding members of the down-home southern rockabilly group, The Kentucky Headhunters. Nancy knew from an early age that music was her passion and thanks her Kentucky cousins for being the musical inspiration in her life, along with her grandmother who was blind and a prolific pianist. She is also inspired by Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Judy Collins, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nancy is active in the Bay Area and Sacramento music scene, performing at local establishments, as well as festivals.

Visit Nancy at http://www.nancynorthrup.com

For those not in the listening area this show will be streamed live at www.kdrt.org

Bruce Salmon on Live DiRT (8/12 at 1pm)

Wed, 08/10/2016 - 3:29pm | Eunah

Bruce Salmon

Dug Deep will host New Orleans native, Texas raised jazz/blues singer/songwriter Bruce Salmon. Bruce is a veteran of the Austin music scene, and began performing as a solo artist in 2012, releasing his first solo album “A Barrel of Monkeys”, in 2014. His music is steeped in the Texas songwriting tradition, as well as New Orleans jazz, funk, and blues. More recently he’s studied ancestral folk music from Eastern Europe. Bruce plays bass, guitars, keyboards, and brass in a broad range of styles and bands, ranging from funk/rock (Joe Rockhead), Texas punk (Alejandro Escovedo), Klezmer/Balkan (The Inheritance/ Mazel Tov Cocktail Hour), and street brass band (Minor Mishap Marching Band). Lance Canales & The Flood on Live DiRT (8/11 at 4:30pm)

Wed, 08/10/2016 - 12:09pm | Eunah

Lance Canales

KDRT broadcaster Bill Wagman, (one half of the Folk Brothers) will host Lance Canales and the Flood live in the KDRT studio on Thursday, August 11th, beginning at 4:30 pm. Lance Canales & The Flood are a roots-blues influenced Americana trio from Fresno, California, where Canales lived the life that so many songs have been written about since the birth of roots music – hard labor, one room shacks and taunting ghosts whispering of a better life. Canales’ guttural vocals combine a hard-edged storytelling approach beneath a stripped down, foot-stomping, acoustic instrumentation. In February 2013, Canales released the single “Plane Crash at Los Gatos: Deportee” (a poem) written by Woody Guthrie in 1948 and labeled by Saint Louis Magazine as a, “gut-wrenchingly beautiful rendition.” The song has been covered by many stellar musicians, but what makes this version so important is that it reveals the names of the Mexican nationals that were simply dubbed as “deportees” in the original news article.
