That's Life

Lois Richter’s format for That’s Life is mostly interviews. Recurring topics include Davis activities and groups; work and life choices; philosophy and theory; plus birding, cooking, art, and other passions. Lois occasionally breaks into music — from ballads to the slack key sounds of Hawaii to golden oldies rock 'n' roll — but mostly there is just talk.

To suggest a topic for discussion or a person to interview, text Lois or leave a message in the comments here.

Live Tuesday 12-1pm

Local filmmakers debut Open Country on March 10 at Odd Fellows Hall -- a benefit for KDRT

Fri, 02/23/2024 - 1:38pm | Diane Crumley

2024-Open-Country-postcard-front@2x.png

Filmmakers Glenda and Jesse Drew of Davis made Open Country, a journey into the roots of American country, to reclaim the music as the creative expression of working people of all colors. The movie features interviews with well-known musicians, performances, archival clips and animation, and it sold out the venue when it recently screened in San Francisco.

The Drews will screen their movie in Davis Sunday, March 10, at the Odd Fellows Hall, doors 6 p.m.; show 6:30 p.m.; Q&A 8:15 p.m. All proceeds from ticket sales and donations will benefit KDRT. We hope to see you there! Tickets available online here. Keep reading to learn more:

Davisville, Feb. 19, 2024: Measure N is normal in Davis, unusual in California

Mon, 02/19/2024 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

N, a detail from NDE sign February 2024.JPG

Measure N is the latest Davis schools parcel tax to come before voters — the latest in a string that goes back 40 years. Relatively few school districts in California have such taxes, and few levy as much as Davis does.

The sample ballot for the March 5th election presents the arguments for and against Measure N, plus a list of what the $768 tax supports. For context, today’s Davisville talks with John Fensterwald, an editor at large with EdSource, about how Californians pay for public schools, the pros and cons of parcel taxes, and why Davis receives less money per student from the state than most other districts receive. EdSource, a nonprofit, reports on education issues in California.

Joel Daniel, house concerts made easy, on Listening Lyrics, Feb. 16, 2024

Mon, 02/19/2024 - 10:30am | Pieter Pastoor

sonic mixer.png

Joel Daniel and special guest Alex Jordan discuss how an app like SonicMixer could be a game-changer in live music.

Musicians (artists) are caught between streaming services and the corporatization of music venues. In this episode of Listening Lyrics, Joel discusses an app that works like Airbnb for house shows.

It is extremely difficult for a start-up band (or even an established one) to get a show and cut their teeth. Venues are tough to crack, but houses are abundant and could be used for house shows more than they are.

The app is easy to use and it works. Joel helped to launch it in Austin last November. In the show he talks about how to get more potential hosts to open their homes to the idea.
