KDRT 95.7 FM is grassroots radio from Davis, CA, airing an eclectic mix of music and public-affairs programming. A project of nonprofit Davis Media Access, KDRT streams worldwide via KDRT.org.

Divine Intervention (1st/3rd week) – The Electric Compost Heap (2nd/4th week)

The Electric Compost Heap with Dug Deep fertlilizes the airwaves every 2nd & 4th Friday, digging through the delightful detritus of blues, soul, country, rock, reggae, jazz, funk, punk, psych, and more to concoct a rich, nutrient-dense musical humus. If there's a 5th Friday, Dug's here too. Dig it, Heapsters!

Davis Music Connections

Davis has a very unique musical scene — from the Mondavi Center’s formal performances to the local clubs where bands and upcoming artists hone their craft. Local and visiting musicians are captured by Jim Buchanan on our Live Tracks program. On Davis Music Connections, we play past Davis bands of note, along with those who are currently touring, taking a little bit of Davis to the rest of the world.

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. The Artery co-op/gallery/store turns 50 this year. Most of its downtown Davis neighbors from the 1970s are gone, so how has the Artery lasted? Heidi Bekebrede and Adele Shaw, two of its members, list several reasons on today’s Davisville, and some might surprise you — they include the hours (most art galleries don’t open daily), the variety (most don’t display so many artists), members who work in the shop, turnover that brings in new artists, fresh displays, and a town with lots of people interested in the arts. The train station a block away helps too.

We also talk about the store’s name, how they find members, the other meaning of “cute” in Bekebrede’s Cuteware, the way Putah Creek inspires Shaw’s paintings, and how managing a 32-machine laundromat in San Francisco introduced Shaw to first- and second-hand stories of her neighborhood from many decades before.

Dug Deep hosts Album of the Week and he'll be spinning the British psych classic, S. F. Sorrow, by The Pretty Things. It's noted for being the first "concept record," having been conceived of and recorded in 1967-68 and released in 1968, well before the Who's Tommy. No comparison between the two pieces, really, but I'm gonna guess you haven't heard S. F. Sorrow much. Hope you can tune in and join us on Wednesday afternoon.
