COVID-19 Community Report Episode 22: Updates from DJUSD with Dr. Cindy Pickett and Immigrant Advocacy with Anoosh Jorjorian - June 2, 2020

On Episode 22, I'm joined by Dr. Cindy Pickett and Anoosh Jorjorian.

For the past three years, Dr. Cindy Pickett has served as the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Equity and Inclusion at UC Davis, and has also been a faculty member in the Department of Psychology.  She also serves as the president of the Davis Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees.  She recently accepted an appointment as inaugural Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at DePaul University in Chicago, a role she starts on July 1. We'll talk about how the school district and the families, faculty, and administration within it have weathered the past few months.

Also, the Yolo Interfaith Immigration Network is a group of people serving and advocating for immigrants in Yolo County.  Back in April, I interviewed then-YIIN President David Lichtenhan about their ApoYolo Project. Project Coordinator Anoosh Jorjorian joins me to talk about the project's milestones and current needs.

The shows airs live at noon Tuesdays on KDRT 95.7 FM in Davis, and https://kdrt.org anywhere.

High Country Music Radio 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken'

This week's High Country Music Radio will feature songs from "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," a 1972 album that introduced many of us to bluegrass and old-time country music. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band wanted to play alongside their bluegrass heroes and bring together two generations of musicians. The Nashville- and Appalachian-based artists include Roy Acuff, Mother Mabelle Carter, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Norman Blake, Vassar Clements, and others. The result is a critically acclaimed album recorded with minimal processing, retaining much of the musician's dialogue between songs.

Tune in KDRT 95.7 FM Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon, or from 7 to 8 p.m, or stream at @KDRT.org

A little bit of magic & a whole lot of FM radio skip

I have a tale to tell about connection over distance, and a little bit of magic—at least it felt that way to me.

Have you ever had one of those days, only for something a little magical to turn it right around? Last Friday was such a day. I felt overwhelmed by work, and was struggling to focus. And then this email arrived:

Dear KDRT,

I wanted to drop you a line after picking up your KDRT signal on 95.7 from really far away! No, I'm not talking Vacaville, Stockton or Yuba City. I am in Laramie, Wyoming which is 875 miles away from Davis, CA.  I was truly using a regular FM radio and antenna. When the atmosphere "pukes up" just right with a combination of clouds and temperature inversions, some very freaky FM reception can occur over many many hundreds of miles.

Alright, this had my interest.
