Jazz After Dark on KDRT - 10th Anniversary Show - October 27 2020

For this 10th Anniversary show of Jazz After Dark, I went back to find our very first playlist from October 26, 2010, and pulled a few of those first jazz numbers, along with some old favorites from the other early shows of 2010 and 11. We’ll hear from Bix Beiderbecke, Eubie Blake, Sidney Bechet, Artie Shaw and His Orchestra, Erskine Hawkins, Ella Fitzgerald with the Ray Charles Singers, Gerry Mulligan, Tony Bennett, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Frank Sinatra, Ramsey Lewis, The Crusaders, Dianne Reeves, Don Ellis, and Allen Toussaint.

So, a group of local clergy walks into a community media station…it sounds like the start of a joke, but rest assured it’s not. More like, a sign of the times.

For the past seven months, I’ve been talking to people about how COVID has impacted their lives — how it’s changed their business, their operations or services, and their lives. As I’ve also mentioned many times during this course of this show, it’s not just a global pandemic we’re weathering--2020 has been a highly complex year, one where layers are being peeled back on institutionalized racism, where fear and scarcity loom large, and where divisiveness seems to be the order of the day. In short, we’re a highly stressed populace.

You may notice that I haven't posted "upcoming shows" for 2018-2019. 

I did, of course, keep my own list of who was scheduled for which day; but I didn't think people were actually looking here to find out what happening in the FUTURE.  Instead, I focussed on keeping the "Archives" descriptions accurate for all my current shows -- usually getting  things entered within a week or two after the show aired.

Now, mid-2020, I am producing my radio shows AT HOME and uploading them to the KDRT site for broadcasting at the usual time.

That means that I am ALWAYS adding descriptions and an image to each show as it gets scheduled, so that I'm always up-to-date.  No need for blogging. To see all my recent "That's Life" shows, go to:  https://kdrt.org/programs/thats-life

Coming up at 8 pm tonight on Jazz After Dark: our featured performer is Earl Hines. Selections will cover the whole arc of his career, from 1928 work with Louis Armstrong to solo performances from the 1970’s. Along the way, Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines performs with Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Rushing, Budd Johnson, Paul Gonsalves, and more. Plus some songs by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and a languorous performance of God Bless The Child by Sonny Rollins.

Davis Media Access and KDRT Celebrate Free Speech Week October 19 - 25 and Community Media Day

Free Speech Week has been celebrated in the U.S. since 2005.  To kick off this special week, we're joining with non-commercial media centers across the country for Community Media Day on October 20th, and will debut a short video highlighting our wide array of  grassroots activities and local projects. Throughout the week, we will continue to post special videos and photos on our social media pages - Davis Media FB  and KDRT FB .  We'll feature our projects in youth media, social justice, community-based public affairs, local election education, and advocacy for local nonprofits,  arts and music. 

 

COVID-19 Community Report Oct. 20, 2020

Each October, the Davis Cemetery District & Arboretum holds a marvelous Dia de los Muertos celebration. Can you think of a more fitting setting for our local adaptation of this beautiful celebration of life and death that originated in Mexico, and today is celebrated all over Central America and here in the U.S.? Despite COVID, the celebration is on, and we'll hear from Executive Director Jessica Smithers how it's been adapted for this year. We'll also learn about some of the other unique features of this suprising local resource.

Also joining us with news of a big COVID pivot is Bobby Weist, president of Davis Firefighters Local 3494. In addition to being heroes on the frontlines, our local firefighters are tireless in their efforts to help others, all year long, and many of us are familiar with their "Fill the Boot" effort prior to each Thanksgiving, where these men and women stand on street corners at busy intersections and collect cash donations in a fire boot, all of which go to fund their Turkey Basket program. This year's effort is virtual, and he'll share how and when and why to donate.

COVID-19 Community Report Oct. 13, 2020

The more I keep digging, the more stories I find there are to be told.

Today we'll hear about families who may have reached such a tough place that they are in true crisis, and we'll hear about the many ways Yolo Crisis Nursery steps up to help. Executive Director Heather Sleuter joins us to chat about the Nursery's services, and the ways it's had to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We'll also hear from Evie Wright, president of Soroptimist International of Davis, which works to empower women and girls through education, training, and financial support as stepping stones to economic empowerment. With its most consistent fundraiser out of the running due to COVID, how is the club adapting, and what's new in its offerings?

Celtic Songlines Oct 13th, 2020

Celtic music continues to evolve and the Celtic Songline library continues to grow. This week we feature a few bands new to our playlist such as Iona, a progressive Celtic rock band from the United Kingdom, which was formed by lead vocalist Joanne Hogg and multi-instrumentalists David Fitzgerald and Dave Bainbridge. Another new addition is Ye Vagabonds,  brothers Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn – who hail from the town of Carlow, south-west of Dublin. Also featured this week are the German band Faun and another addition is Pagan Folk, a collective of stellar musicians. Rounding out the program are the always amazing Old Blind Dogs, from San Francisco is the band The Fire, Irish piper Tommy Martin with Seamus Thompson, The Fureys, Capercaillie and Altan.
