At the Galleria Shopping Mall
by Tony Hoagland

Tony Hoagland
Just past the bin of pastel baby socks and underwear, there are some 49-dollar Chinese-made TVs;

one of them singing news about a far-off war,
one comparing the breast size of an actress from Hollywood

to the breast size of an actress from Bollywood.
And here is my niece Lucinda,

who is nine and a true daughter of Texas,
who has developed the flounce of a pedigreed blonde

and declares that her favorite sport is shopping.
Today is the day she embarks upon her journey,

swinging a credit card like a scythe
through the meadows of golden merchandise.

Today is the day she stops looking at faces,
and starts assessing the labels of purses;

So let it begin. Let her be dipped in the dazzling bounty
and raised and wrung out again and again.

And let us watch.

I'm Back

Between my knee surgery and a trip to Montana for a family reunion I've left you listening to lots of old shows (I'm sure you're tired of the old "summer" show).

Tune in this Sunday, August 22, for a brand new show. I'm anxious to get behind the mic and play some Jug Band Music. Join me!

The Legendary Doug James and the sounds of The Hucklebucks on The Grapevine August 12th

It is my pleasure to host a visit to the KDRT studio by the legendary Doug James of The Hucklebucks, one of Sacramento's very best blues bands from a LONG time back. The Hucklebucks have played all over the greater Tri-County region and to points beyond. Winners of the Sacramento News & Review SAMMIES award for Best Blues Band, these guys have a new record out called "Juke Box Blues". They will be playing a record release party at Sacramento's infamous Torch Club on Friday, September 24th, but listeners of KDRT and The Grapevine can hear a special preview of "Juke Box Blues" on August 12th....LIVE from 7 to 8 p.m. Doug will not only hand pick some tunes from "Juke Box Blues", but will also spin some tunes from some of his favorite blues musicians that absolutely "stop time". Join us on K-DIRT for some cool sounds and an exclusive listen to the new record from The Hucklebucks. Doug will also be ringing up a copy of "Juke Box Blues" to a listener on the air.

The Golden Road's Annual "Days Between" Salute to Jerry Garcia

On Sunday, August 8th, the Golden Road will be airing it's annual broadcast to salute the memory of Jerry Garcia and all the wonderful music he created during his time on this rock. The "Days Between" represent his birthday - August 1st, and the day of his passing - August 9th. Dead Heads and fans of his sound have kept a new, but nice tradition going by celebrating Jerry in their own way during this period each year.

During this broadcast of the Golden Road, you will be treated to a bunch of cherry picked sounds that will encompass just about every style that Jerry immersed himself in...folk, bluegrass, jazz, classic R & B, country, reggae, the blues and of course, the unique good ol' Grateful Dead style.

The show will air live on August 8th from 7 to 9 pm, will then be replayed on August 13th from 10 pm to 12 midnight and August 14th from 3 to 5 pm. And you can always catch the archived broadcast any time at http://www.kdrt.org/station/archives/153

There were days
and there were days
and there were days I know
when all we ever wanted
was to learn and love and grow

Once we grew into our shoes
we told them where to go
walked halfway around the world

The Bad Mother
by Susan Griffin
The bad mother wakes from dreams
of imperfection trying to be perfection.
All night she’s engineered a train
too heavy with supplies
to the interior. She fails.
The child she loves
has taken on bad habits, cigarettes
maybe even drugs. She
recognizes lies. You don’t
fool me, she wants to say,
the bad mother, ready to play
and win.
This lamb who’s gone –
this infant she is
pinioned to – does not listen,
she drives with all her magic down a
different route to darkness where
all life begins.

4) Things Have Changed, Bob Dylan 5:11
5) Breakdown, Tom Petty 2:43

Somewhere Under The Bridge
By Karen J. Weyant

Kids used to hang out. Hussies said my grandmother
of girls who wore their skirts too short,

and teased their hair too high, while my mother
dismissed the boys who hooked their thumbs

in the belt loops of their jeans as bad elements.

Lynryd Skynyrd, The Grateful Dead, Fatpaw and Robert Bly, Mountain Mama pays attention to time

Rumi: The Edge of the Roof translated by Robert Bly
" I don't like it here, I want to go back.
According to the old Knowers
If you're absent from the one you love
Even for one second that ruins the whole thing!

There must be someone... just to find
One sign of the other world in this town
Would be enough.

You know the great Chinese Simurgh bird
Got caught in this net...
And what can I do? I'm only a wren.

My desire-body, don't come
Strolling over this way.
Sit where you are, that's a good place.

When you want dessert, you choose something rich.
In wine, you look for what is clear and firm.
What is the rest? The rest is mirages,
And blurry pictures, and milk mixed with water.
The rest is self hatred, and mocking other people, and bombing.

So just be quiet and sit down.
The reason is: you are drunk,
And this is the edge of the roof."

2) Time Waits for No One, The Rolling Stones 6:39
3) Time of the Season, The Zombies 3:34

Your Family Reunion
By Perie Longo

I will never be able to keep your family straight.
Is the one with the short, brown hair the sister
or cousin of the woman who was the wife
of a polygamist and why won’t she talk to her?
What’s the name of the one with the dark hair,
who looks like she stopped drinking
since the last reunion? The pretty, young girl
with the very flat stomach and belly button ring,
is she the one who doesn’t know who her father is
or the other one holding a knife in the air?
And the man with his camping site set up
like he invented the whole idea, with a two-foot flame
under a ten-quart kettle, who is he the son of?
How about the one who rewired our camper
so the lights work off the city power
while we’re deep in the woods with no hookup,
is he the ex-nuclear submarine commander?
Who is the mother, again, of those three sisters
the one who ran off with the best friend
of their father? I’m the only one here

The Golden Road's Annual "4th of July Special"

Hey K-Dirt listeners...be sure to tune in for The Golden Road's annual "4th of July Special" broadcast.

In this edition of The Golden Road we are gonna lay down a rocking soundtrack to honor our nation's birthday. Have a full armload of classic Americana sounds courtesy of the good ol' Grateful Dead to send out over the airwaves including a bunch of great material from the most recent Grateful Dead Production release, "Crimson, White and Indigo". Recorded live in Philly in July of 1989, a beautiful multi-track from JFK Stadium in the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed.

We also will help you to "Get Hip To History" with a ravingly cool rap by Lord Buckley about a little tea party that went down in Boston a few years back that helped spark the fuse to the revolution...you won't want to miss this!
