Our voices press
from us

Yellow fall roars

How one more season will alter and range,

When autumn gathers, the tree
That the leaves sang
Reddens dark slowly, then, suddenly free,
Turns like a key,
Opening air where they hang

and the winding
of the vine

with the year’s
fermented wine

Gary Simon guests on the Oct. 20 edition of "Speakeasy," a local talk show that airs alternate Wednesdays at 10 a.m. on KDRT-LP, 95.7 FM in Davis. The show is also streamed live and archived at http://kdrt.org. Repeats air the Thursday after taping at 5:30 p.m.

Simon, co-founder and co-chairman of SARTA's CleanStart program. SARTA is a non-profit organization founded to foster entrepreneurial growth in emerging technologies & attract venture capital to the greater Sacramento region. Their Sacramento Clean Tech Showcase, highlighting the clean tech sector's innovators, investors, educators and companies, takes place Oct. 26 on the CSU Sactamento campus.

Hey K-Dirt listeners...this past week, The Grapevine featured the new record by the one & only, Dr. John. It is called, "Tribal" and is a knock out of classic New Orleans roots sound with the classic Dr. John touch of wonderful piano and a vocal style that can't duplicated. The icing on the cake is that Dr. John has really come up with some lyrics that are incredibly topical and deal with so much of what is currently goin' down in our country. Really think you'll dig it!

Tomorrow's segment of "Speakeasy" highlights the Cool Davis Green Living Festival which takes place this Saturday.

In solidarity with 10-10-10 climate actions worldwide, organizers are planning a festival event that connects low-carbon lifestyle choices with a healthy environment, personal well-being, international eco-justice, and a thriving community. The festival is billed as a time of inspiration, fun, education, and celebration. Lynne Nittler, who is involved with Cool Davis Initiative and serves on the board of the Cool Davis Foundation.

Speakeasy features good conversation with folks doing interesting work in Davis and beyond. Autumn Labbe-Renault hosts. Speakeasy airs live alternate Wednesdays at 10 a.m. You can also listen to this program live or archived at kdrt.org.

Last year we started a new tradition called BBQ on the Backlot. It's an Open House - with food, fun and festivity, and a chance for Davis Media Access' producers, DJ's, board, staff (and anyone else who would like to find out about DMA) to enjoy a relaxing evening. Davis Media Access is the parent organization behind KDRT, DCTV public access channel 15, and DJUSD educational access channel 17. The event takes place from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 7 and we encourage everyone to come down. DMA will supply the burgers and dogs (veggie options will be available) and beverages- but potluck items and smiles are encouraged. We are located at 1623 Fifth Street in Davis, and we'll be in the back parking lot. Follow the BBQ smell...come down and meet your favorite DJ!

Getting ready for the autumn (my favorite season, natch), I'm reflecting on a sunny smile from a sunny summer moment. Here's George Moore, KDRT programmer and volunteer extraordinaire, at the July 4th beer concession in Community Park. George spearheaded the effort to organize our volunteer booth there, and shepherded us through the permits and process. A big KDRT thanks to you, George! And a shout out to Rod Moseanko and his friends and family, who all helped out, as well as Lois Richter for the decorations and setup, and all the other KDRT and DMA volunteers who spend the day helping serve up foam & suds.
