Happy birthday to Edvard Grieg, Norway's favorite troll!Tue, 06/05/2012 - 1:00pm | Dr. PaulEdvard Grieg, no more than 5 feet tall and rarely weighing more than 100 pounds, was a cultural giant of Norway. His birthday was June 15, 1843. He is the composer of the still-popular Piano Concerto in a minor, and of numerous pieces of nationalistic significance for his native country. Today's show features some incidental music, the "Peer Gynt Suite #1" that includes the lyrical "Morning Mood," and the rollicking "In the Hall of the Mountain King." The curtain is raised on today's show with an overture by that all-time master of overtures, Rossini. Included today are Beethoven's tour de force for piano, orchestra, and chorus that foreshadows his "Ode to Joy." For cello fans, included is a concerto by Vivaldi; for guitar lovers, we have solo works by Tarrega and a quintet by Boccherini. Aram Khatchaturian, and Monteverdi also make an appearance today. We conclude with Lalo's "Symphonie Espanole". |

Two sets of Phish opening for Santana, summers '92 and '96Sun, 06/03/2012 - 7:00pm | RadhaThere were two delightful summers where Phish opened for Carlos Santana. The first was a US tour in the sweet summer of 1992, and the second was a bedazzling whirlwind European tour in the sweeter summer of 1996. On one single occasion (yes, only one), Mr. Santana himself (plus percussionists Karl Perazzo and Raul Rekow) sat in for three Phish songs...and we offer this set up for your listening pleasure. The show took place on 7.25.1992 in an all-ages outdoor amphitheater on the side of a mountain in Stowe, Vermont. I wish I had been there, it was a great show. The second hour is another opener for Santana, this one staged in front of a 10th century Italian cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo in Pistoia, Italy. Can you imagine how good that venue (and show!) must have been? Some Phish...some Santana...some ancient Italian spirituality...aaah...Anyway, this is the set where Trey gets to practice his Italian, he does pretty good. Check it out! |

Among social media, Twitter has less impact than Facebook, but is much more than just another online flavor of the month. A recent Pew Internet/American Life Project study says 8 percent of Americans use Twitter daily. If that ratio holds true for Davis, then we’ve got more than 5,000 daily tweeters in our town. The guests for today’s show, Danielle DeBow (who works for Nugget Market) and Blake Cooper (employed at UC Davis), have started Davis TweetUp, which “connects Davis professionals in support of local businesses and our community.” On Davisville they explain what that means, the different ways they use Twitter themselves, and how it all ties in to Davis.
