Wed, 02/22/2023 - 11:10am | Peter Schiffman

OIP.aOsg6SibfgZK3Po8Q4CL4gHaEK.jpeg

The BBC recently commissioned singer-songwriters -- including Martyn Joseph, pictured here -- to pen ballads about ordinary people in northeast England who have done extraordinary things for their community. Joseph wrote "Albert's Place," a song about a soup kitchen and food bank in Sunderland run by Andrea Bell.

Also on today's show, Brother Bill celebrates Black History Month with songs by African-American country and western singers.

Monday nights gain some extra Twang

Tue, 02/21/2023 - 10:56am | Bill Buchanan

DJ Dirk.png

From DJ Dirk, the host of this fine show, newly moved to Monday nights:

"Americana music didn't just show up one day -- the genre has evolved from deep and varied country music roots. Twang Thang explores both the old and the new and a bunch of stuff from the in between. [I take you] on a weekly musical journey that lifts the spirits, gets the toes tapping and, well, hopefully adds a little Twang to your life."

Davisville, Feb. 20, 2023: Decades later, the Tuskegee Airmen still have things to tell us

Mon, 02/20/2023 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

George and Edith McMillan Roberts on their wedding day.png

If you’re reading this, you likely already know at least a little about the Tuskegee Airmen. These 16,000 men and women helped defend the United States during World War II even though as Black Americans they had to overcome Jim Crow laws and racism just to be allowed to fight for their home.

Today’s guests are Leigh Roberts and Lanelle Brent, whose father George “Spanky” Roberts was a fighter pilot and Tuskegees’ commander during the war. The sisters help run the Tuskegee Airmen Heritage Chapter of Greater Sacramento. You might have heard them speak in Davis.

Listening Lyrics' farewell show, Feb. 10, 2023

Fri, 02/10/2023 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

Listening L thank you poster.jpg

I thought a farewell show would be one with mixed emotions.

Not so, the guests as usual made it such a great hour.

Thank you to all the hundreds of musicians who have shared their talents with me and the audience.

Ten-plus years of weekly Friday shows has been such a wonderful gift to me and Jeanne. Each moment is a treasure.

Thank you Jess Kelly, Nat lefkof and The Raquetbangers (Robert Polon, Timur Katsnelson) for sharing this final episode with me.

Finally, a huge thank you to my co-host and wife for all of her support and love.
