OUR PROGRAMS

That's Life

Lois Richter’s format for That’s Life is mostly interviews. Recurring topics include Davis activities and groups; work and life choices; philosophy and theory; plus birding, cooking, art, and other passions. Lois occasionally breaks into music — from ballads to the slack key sounds of Hawaii to golden oldies rock 'n' roll — but mostly there is just talk.

To suggest a topic for discussion or a person to interview, text Lois or leave a message in the comments here.

Twang Thang

Twang-Thang-farmstead-image-Yolo

Twang Thang features outlaw country old and new, showcasing the folks who sowed the harder-edged musical seeds for what we today call Americana, as well as the newer artists who continue the tunes and outlaw ethos forward. George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Lucinda Willimans, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakum, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billie Jo Shaver ... Americana music didn't just show up one day — it has deep and varied country music roots. Twang Thang explores the originators, the newcomers, and the music that happened along the way!

Praise Time with Preacher

Praise Time with Preacher

The word "gospel" is derived for the old Anglo-Saxon word meaning “good message” or “good news." Host Preacher believes gospel music is powerful, whether the listener is or is not Christian — that everyone can enjoy listening to gospel because it is uplifting and inspiring, sung with passion and belief from the artist, touching all who hear it in a good and heartfelt way. The aim of Praise Time is to help listeners find what Preacher believes lives in everyone: a good spirit that drives us to be the best we can be.

Live Tuesday 4-5pm

Roots, Shoots and Leaves

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. And if you listen long enough, you may experience some musical enlightenment.

Live Tracks goes all-vinyl for this week’s show

Fri, 07/14/2023 - 9:10am | kdrtradio

Petergunn.jpg

Jim is playing vinyl tonight on Live Tracks.

The experience is “complete[ly] analog if you’re listening on July 13 to the airwaves,” he says. “If you’re listening to the replays, it got digitized so that it could get replayed for you. Still pretty darn cool.

“I’ll be going to some very famous live recordings from around the country, from the 1940s, ‘50s, and possibly even the ‘60s.” Plus Beatles history, stories, a little trivia. And lots of music. Take it away, Henry Mancini.

Folk Brothers starts this week’s show with Irish singer’s cover of ‘Angel from Montgomery’

“I have a mix of things for you this morning,” says Folk Brothers host Bill Wagman at the start of his latest program. “I’m going to start off with a cover of ‘Angel from Montgomery’ sung by Jessie Buckley (pictured), an Irish singer who starred in a movie called Wild Rose. She played a young country singer in Ireland and had dreams of going to Nashville and performing on the Grand Ole Opry. … It’s a good movie.”

And a great song, starting off a great set. Let Bill take it from here.

Davisville, July 10, 2023: Downtown projects propose 460 new homes, 80 new parking spaces

Mon, 07/10/2023 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Screenshot 2023-07-07 at 2.33.15 PM.png

Three separate housing proposals have recently emerged that would add about 460 apartments and live/work lofts at three locations on G Street downtown, from 2nd Street near the Amtrak station north to the former Hibbert Lumber property on 5th. You can find the applicants’ plans and illustrations on the city’s projects website. One feature that immediately stands out is the idea of building most of these new homes without parking for cars.

Our guest today, Steve Streeter, has a background in planning and recently completed two terms on the Davis Planning Commission. He has no stake in any of the proposals. We talk about what’s proposed, context, why these projects are emerging now, and how the city's downtown plan and new state laws that encourage homebuilding are influencing these developments.

For all of you milestone enthusiasts: Eight songs about 600, on A Constant Grin

Mon, 07/10/2023 - 8:55am | kdrtradio

600 candles 2.jpg

Chris Mussen devoted the 600th episode of his program A Constant Grin to previously unknown musicians performing eight farther-afield songs, each with "600" in their name. Six hundred strokes, 600 miles, $600 short on rent ... you get the idea. It's a lot of fun.

"600 shows," he says. "It's pretty crazy, even for me, and I made all of them."

Chris includes his ruminations on 15 years of indie rock broadcasting free of charge.

Timeout Radio explores UC Davis

Tue, 07/04/2023 - 12:37pm | kdrtradio

UC Davis tower-1.jpg

On this edition of Timeout Radio, explore how a 5,300-acre university came to exist in the little farm town that was Davisville, Calif. Davis was designated as a University of California campus in 1959 and is now the largest campus in the UC system. Find out how its mascot Gunrock got his name and why the campus has red London double-deck buses. UC Davis Chancellor Gary May tells us about his path to engineering, his humongous comic book collection, and his favorite Star Trek character.

Then visit London, where Big Ben's clock is still adjusted with an old penny, and where half the London Underground is actually above the ground.

Paul Simon explains his vision of mortality, June 30, 2023

Fri, 06/30/2023 - 6:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

LOGO IMAGINING YD c3k x 3k.jpeg

This week's guest is Paul Simon via his latest musical release, Seven Psalms. By sculpting his lyrics into his music, he explains his thoughts on mortality and his observations on life. This album has no majestic orchestrations as in Bridge Over Troubled Water, or snappy happy dance tunes, as so many of his songs do. Mr. Simon shares his thoughts and asks you to listen.

I imagined myself listening under a canopy of stars. He brings up reflections of his life we all see and feel in our own lives, and he admits we all interpret in our own way. His version is facinating.
