Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live on the first, third and occasional fifth Friday of the month.

Live Friday 11am-1pm
Replays Sunday 9-11am
DJ(s):

Davisville, May 8, 2017: Troop 1999 Ditched Their Screens Every Night for a Week

Mon, 05/08/2017 - 9:05pm | Bill Buchanan

Troop 1999, and Jacquie Alldritt in back.jpg

So, how many hours have you spent today being entertained by images on your phone or laptop? Maybe more than you know or want. Today’s guests have a remedy for that—they decided to turn off their screens each weeknight for a week at 6 p.m., and invited others in Davis to do the same. Today five of the members of Davis Girl Scout Troop 1999, all 10 to 11 years old, and parent leader Jacqui Alldritt (in the back), talk about how the experience changed them, the response from friends and classmates, and the value of looking away from YouTube so you can do something else. They played with friends, read, talked and spent time talking with their families. Some have dogs who were happy to get their attention back!

Divine Intervention Strikes - May 8

Mon, 05/08/2017 - 6:50pm | Jess Goddésse

Big Organ.jpg

Big Pipe Organ cover art

Man, look at all the KEYS on that thing -- that sure is one big organ, and it's sure to be featured during Vinyl Vespers on Divine Intervention, airing this evening from 7 to 9p on KDRT. Extending far beyond big organs, there will be much new music -- maybe even more than last week, if that's humanly possible. We'll probably start with rock/pop but who knows where we'll end... Tune in and groove.

Album of the Week - Dengue Fever "Escape from Dragon House" - TH May 4

Thu, 05/04/2017 - 4:39pm | Jess Goddésse

R-2838378-1303341493.jpeg.jpg

Escape from Dragon House cover art

We can't say it better than Pitchfork did back in 2005, when Dragon House hit the shelves: "L.A.-based band fold Ethiopian touches into a Cambodian style of pop heavily influenced by classic American surf rock and Nuggets-era garage-psych." That about sums it up. Tune in, 5-6p PT, for Dengue Fever on AotW! @JessGoddesse hosts.

Mon, 05/01/2017 - 6:17pm | Jess Goddésse

Temptation.jpg

Temptation cover art

You know we didn't play enough new music last time 'round on Divine Intervention, and so we'll attempt to make up for that in spades this week. We have SO much new music across genres, if you don't hear something new at least once (or so) per set, then we're not doing our divine task, and you can feel free to holler at the hostesse in the comments. Along with all this newfound fun, we'll "tempt" you with Vinyl Vespers, a'course. Do tune in, 7-9p PT, only on KDRT.

Sharing your passion and the ability to articulate it well made this hour with Neil a delight. He can sing, he can play, he can compose. Neil Heaton is a pianist from Davis, California.  As influenced by jazz virtuosos as he is alternative auteurs, his music attempts to find the common ground between rock, jazz, pop, and hip-hop. That description is exactly why his compositions are a delight. Listen in as we talk with and listen to Neil. Vist and listen to Neil https://neilheaton.bandcamp.com.

Album of the Week - Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) by Eno - Apr 27

Thu, 04/27/2017 - 4:43pm | Dug Deep

takingtigermountain.jpg

Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) is Eno's second solo album, inspired by a series of postcards regarding a Chinese revolutionary opera of the same name.  Eno described his understanding of the title as referring to "the dichotomy between the archaic and the progressive...Half  Taking Tiger Mountain – that Middle Ages physical feel of storming a military position – and half (By Strategy) – that very, very 20th-century mental concept of a tactical interaction of systems."  Eno and artist Peter Schmidt developed instruction cards called Oblique Strategies to use throughout the creative process of the album.  The content of the lyrics seems to range from espionage to the Chinese Communist Revolution.  Forty plus years later, this album is still mindblowing. Listen in for yourself starting at 5p PT on KDRT.
