20. Pandemic Pets

Mon, 02/22/2021 - 4:00pm | Rohan

Dog 1.jpg

Since mid-March 2020 there has been a huge surge in animal adoptions, fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Melissa Bain, a professor at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, tells us about the joys and challenges of pandemic pets, and what to consider when adopting animal companions during the pandemic. We meet 14-year-old Davis resident Kate Phillips and her canine companion Winston. Winston became part of the Phillips family last summer. Hear about the science behind why there is such a deep bond between dogs and humans and learn some cool facts about dogs. Then visit Siberia, where dogs first joined the human pack 23,000 years ago.

Live Tracks for Feb 18th, 2021: Joy and Madness Erupts!

Thu, 02/18/2021 - 9:10pm | Jim Buchanan

KDRT-Joy-and-Madness-group-image (3).jpg

In February 2019, the eight piece soul and funk band  Joy and Madness exploded onto the stage at Odd Fellows Hall, and kept the crowd dancing throughout the evening.  Jim "Live Tracks" Buchanan recorded this epic, joy-filled event and shares it tonight.  Joy and Madness describe their sound as "a raucous mix of raw stonesy energy, pulsing groove, and juicy horn lines coloring tightly crafted songs". They’ve shared the stage with other high energy performers such as Tower of Power, Trombone Shorty, and Collective Soul. They describe their front man and vocalist Hans Eberbach as bringing so much freewheeling energy to the stage, that he has literally broken right through the floorboards.

COVID-19 Community Report Feb 16th, 2021 - Speaking with Davis Teachers Amy George and Dianna Stommel

Tue, 02/16/2021 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-DJUSD-logo (2).jpg

This month I’m conducting a series of interviews devoted to the reopening of in-person instruction in the Davis Joint Unified School District.  I have two interviews today: teachers Amy George (6th grade) and Dianna Stommel (11th grade). Dianna is also the current president of the Davis Teachers Association. Next week, I’ll speak to parents with different opinions about reopening. Both teachers share what's it been like to teach remotely this year, and how they've worked to build and maintain community in their classrooms. We also discuss what would make them feel safe and valued as the shift to hybrid and in-person instruction commences. Dianna addresses the DTA's position on reopening.

Davisville, Feb. 15, 2021: Link21 would bring Davis closer to Bay Area by reducing travel times

Mon, 02/15/2021 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Cap Corridor at Davis 021121 2.jpg

If San Francisco were an hour closer to Davis, how would that change life in Davis? We might find out in the next 10 to 20 years, thanks to a program that is starting to take shape now. Link21, sponsored by BART and the Capitol Corridor, would add a second transbay rail crossing as part of an ambitious, expensive plan to extend rail connections throughout the 21-county megaregion that stretches from Yuba County to Monterey. The program’s components include faster Capitol Corridor train service between Sacramento and San Francisco, among other changes. People throughout the region will have a chance to shape what gets built, and doing it all fairly is one of the major goals.

Today we talk with Camille Tsao, Capitol Corridor project manager for Link21, about what’s in the works.

That's Lisa Henderson

Thu, 02/11/2021 - 1:00pm | Lois Richter

LiaH&Lois_zooming_01.png

Lisa Henderson is a dynamo!  She is always very busy, yet never too busy to help if help is needed.  Lois and Lisa have worked together on many genealogy activities -- Davis Genealogy Club presentations (and now zoom meetings), the DGC website, IGGC (the International German Genealogy Conference) in 2019 and other events. We have also shared some just-for-fun times.  This episode of "That's Life" was recorded during the pandemic (summer of 2020) and does not have current announcements.

History!  It's all HISTORY !!  (Family history, that is.)  Enjoy!
