ABOUT US

KDRT 95.7 FM is grassroots radio from Davis, CA, airing an eclectic mix of music and public-affairs programming. A project of nonprofit Davis Media Access, KDRT streams worldwide via KDRT.org.

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Ian Tyson passed away at his cattle ranch on Dec. 29. Long after folk stardom with Syliva Fricker in the 1960s, Tyson had a long career as a singer-songwriter who almost single-handedly revived Western (aka "cowboy") music. Blaze Foley (pictured) died by gunshot in 1989. But Brother Bill watched Ethan Hawkes' biofilm Blaze over the holiday, and was inspired to present music from that soundtrack. And more.

In the nearly 106 years that Davis has been a city, the City Council has had fewer than 100 members total. Not a big number for a city that now numbers 67,000 people.

Today we talk with Dan Carson, who became the newest former member of the council after losing his seat to Bapu Vaitla last November. We talk a little about Measure H and his lawsuit challenging the ballot statement opposing the measure, a criticized tactic that Carson later regretted. We spend more time on what he learned about the city from being on the council, how he thinks Davis is doing, and what he does and does not miss now that he no longer has the job.

A few weeks ago I was in Portland visiting my daughter and her family. While there, I drove my grandson to high school every morning. He would hop into the car and link his phone to my radio, and off we went, listening to his music. Wyatt is 15, and I really liked his music selections. I asked him to send me some of his playlist, and that is what you will hear on this hour of Listening Lyrics. It's a rather sophisticated selection of music old and new, and perfect for my last show in 2022.
