Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live Friday 11am-1pm

Davisville, May 15, 2023: Integrating a traumatic week into Davis

Mon, 05/15/2023 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Spring 2023.JPG

How do you make sense of what just happened in Davis? Two people stabbed to death in public parks, and a third person seriously injured. The town’s responses included mourning for David Breaux and Karim Abou Najm, vigils, donations to help Kimberlee Guillory recover from her injuries, and fear, followed by a huge sense of relief when Davis police arrested the suspected killer.

And — now what? How do you find perspective? Listening can be a start. Today on Davisville we talk with Susan Cosio, a retired hospital chaplain, ordained pastor and longtime resident of Davis, who has spent most of her adult life helping people navigate crises.

This week on Na Mele O Hawai'i: Healing for Davis, and celebrating moms

Fri, 05/12/2023 - 11:12am | kdrtradio

hawaiian program picture_0.jpg

This week's Na Mele o Hawai'i  opens with a tribute in memoriam and support to the victims of the recent attacks in Davis. Music has its legitimate place in the healing process, and we hope our offering of Hawaiian music, filled with aloha, can help in that process.

For the remainder of the show, we celebrate Mother's Day (May 14) with a shower of mele all about pua -- flowers. Enjoy!

Imagining Yolo Davis, May 5, 2023: Rotts of Friends with Renee Lancaster

Fri, 05/05/2023 - 6:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

LOGO IMAGINING YD c3k x 3k.jpg

This week Renee Lancaster, the founder of Rotts of Friends, shares her love and devotion to our four-legged friends. From the Woodland nonprofit's website:

"The creation of Rotts of Friends is the long-term dream of Renee Lancaster. As an experienced breeder of German Shepherds and Rottweilers for police, personal protection, and working companions, she has seen firsthand the growth of abuse and neglect of dogs of all breeds.

"The heart of Rotts of Friends started with the deep love and appreciation of the Rottweiler breed. For more than three decades, Renee has watched as this breed has gone from relative obscurity to public persecution. In 1981, Rottweilers were an unknown breed. By 1990, the misplaced popularity with these dogs caused shelters to swell with increased numbers of Rottweilers and other 'bad-boy' dogs.

The Folk Brothers for May 3, 2023: Remembering Gordon Lightfoot

Wed, 05/03/2023 - 11:10am | Peter Schiffman

OIP.RYdtPAdJc1AZPA9igOq7cAHaF7.jpeg

The iconic Canadian singer-songwriter (pictured) has passed away at the age of 84. But Willie Nelson is going strong at 90, albeit "California Sober," and he celebrated with a star-studded birthday concert last weekend in L.A.. Doc Watson would have been 100 in March, so a new tribute album -- I Am a Pilgrim -- has appeared. And Brother Bill digs into traditional and not-so-traditional renditions of British ballads.
