George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Lucinda Willimans, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakum, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billie Jo Shaver ... Americana music didn't just show up one day — it has deep and varied country music roots. Twang Thang explores the originators, the newcomers, and the music that happened along the way!

COVID-19 Community Report Episode 43: Speaking with Yolo County Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson - Dec 1st, 2020

Tue, 12/01/2020 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-guest-Aimee-Sisson-PHO.jpeg

As Yolo County saw its adjusted daily case rate for the week ending Nov. 22 jump to 28.2 per 100,000 residents--up from 20.9 just four days prior--many of us are wondering what the numbers might look like 7-10 days after holiday gatherings at Thanksgiving.

It's a good moment to check in with Dr. Aimee Sisson, who joined Yolo County as its chief Public Health Officer in October after resigning from the same position in Placer County when officials there decided to lessen restrictions around COVID-19.

We'll talk about our numbers, what we might expect in the coming weeks and months, and generally check in about the state of public health in Yolo County. We'll also talk about the hard and sometimes demoralizing front-line work that public health officers face as they carry out the state's often unpopular mandates.

Davisville, Nov. 23, 2020: Movies and the pandemic, with Davis critic Derrick Bang

Mon, 11/23/2020 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Derrick 1 Nov 2020.jpg

Even though the pandemic has closed theaters in Davis for most of 2020, we’re still presenting our annual movie show with Davis film critic Derrick Bang—even if only to learn what has survived the dislocations of the year. Derrick writes reviews for the Davis Enterprise and his blog, Derrick Bang on Film. We talk about how the pandemic has affected movie-making and his job as a critic, the films still coming out at what would normally be a big time of the year, and films he’s looking forward to. Because movies reflect the culture, I also asked him to list a few movies about pandemics, such as The Omega Man and Andromeda Strain.

COVID-19 Community Report Episode 42: Speaking with the Davis School Arts Foundation and 9th Grade Student for Pandemic Perspectives - Nov 17th, 2020

Tue, 11/17/2020 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-DSAF and Rohan KDRT.jpg

At a moment when Yolo County has been returned to the most restrictive tier under the state's COVID-19 protocol, we hear two perspectives about the pandemic's impact on school-aged populations here in Davis.

My first guest today is Lorraine Nail-Visher, president of the Davis School Arts Foundation, which supports culturally relevant arts education for children in Davis public schools through project grants, advocacy, and arts integration training for educators. We'll hear about the foundation's work in general, its funding, and its recent decision to concentrate its efforts on one grade and on one centralized effort during the pandemic, with the Arts Kit project in partnership with the Davis Arts Center.

Davisville, Nov. 9, 2020: Student-run KDVS plans a future without Freeborn

Sat, 11/07/2020 - 3:59pm | Bill Buchanan

Inside KDVS (photo from UC Davis Magazine).png

KDVS, the University of California Davis radio station run by students, is at a crossroads. It’s the last occupant of Freeborn Hall, and must move. It’s coping with a pandemic that has reduced access to its studio. Technology and patterns of how students listen to music has changed tremendously since the station began in the 1960s, so that’s another factor. And mixed in with all that is its legacy of decades as a voice for music and ideas that reflect the interests of UC Davis students. Today we talk with Noel Fernandez, the general manager of KDVS and a UC Davis senior, about where the station is headed.

Nick Zhilin (Николай Жилин), a Musician in St. Petersburg, Talks About Music

Thu, 11/05/2020 - 10:56am | Pieter Pastoor

nick Николай Жилин.jpg

Nick Zhilin - Look who I found.

On my photo Instagram account (pastoorpics), I have followed a fellow photographer (emptynous_photo ). I noticed that he is also a musician. That's when the roots for this interview were planted.

Nick Zhilin (Николай Жилин) was born, raised and lives in St. Petersburg, Russia. He grew up in a family with three brothers; his mother encouraged his musical studies. Nick plays the piano, guitar, and loves to perform on his Balalaika. He writes his own songs, and experiences what many young musicians do, mainly perfecting their music in their spare time.

Nick is also involved with his university in the study of world religions and philosophy.
