Davisville, May 10, 2021: Meaningful work, plus a very cool job title

Mon, 05/10/2021 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Putah Creek at Winters bridge 050121.JPG

Putah Creek in Yolo County is much better off than it was a generation ago, and Rich Marovich’s job is part of the reason why. He’s the creek’s streamkeeper, and his work has involved him in everything from restoration projects to the removal of trash and derelict cars from the channel. On today’s show we talk about his work, some of the legal clashes in its history, upcoming improvements the public can enjoy, the return of the salmon, and his favorite locations ... and I wonder how Davis might be different today if Putah hadn't been diverted away from our river-less town in the 19th century. Imagine a riverfront in central Davis.

The start of the program refers to the 1969 hit song written by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival, inspired by his memories of playing by Putah Creek as a boy. Here's more about the song, "Green River."

Thanks for supporting KDRT on BDOG2021

Fri, 05/07/2021 - 5:20pm | Diane Crumley

DMA-BDOG2021-TY-sun flower-dogs-kdrt-- Square.png

During the 24 hours of Big Day of Giving (BDOG) on May 6, KDRT and Davis Media Acccess received close to 100 donations, and we exceeded our 24-hour goal for the second year in a row. Thank you for the generous support of our grassroots community media!

The 98 participating nonprofits in Yolo County received $1.5 million -- up 75% from the pre-pandemic 2019 figures, according to the Yolo Community Foundation. Also shattering records was the total of $13.3 million for 688 regional  nonprofits reported by local BDOG organizer, the Sacramento Region Community Foundation.

Did you plan on donating to KDRT and just not get around to it? No problem. BDOG2021 served as the kickoff for our Annual Spring Appeal Fundraiser. You can donate throughout May and June at kdrt.org/donate.

Jazz After Dark May 6th 2021 BDOG show

Thu, 05/06/2021 - 8:00am | Don Shor

jazz logo 2021.jpg

Good morning — we’ve got a special edition of Jazz After Dark today. Call it Jazz in the Morning, to start the local broadcast day at KDRT FM in Davis on this Big Day of Giving in the Sacramento/Yolo County area.

Local nonprofit organizations come together on BDOG to raise funds through one site, one big push, one easy way to help support those local community organizations that do so much. Nonprofits took a big hit with the pandemic, unable to run their usual public fund appeals and activities.

KDRT is a part of Davis Media Access, one of the nonprofits you can help all through this 24-hour fund drive.

If you like local radio, community radio, then head on over to bigdayofgiving.org/DavisMedia to contribute. Anytime today, any amount.

In the world of folk music, the pandemic has led to many transformations. On April 21, the duo formally known as "Mandolin Orange" announced on social media that going forward, they were to be known as "Watchhouse." This morning we debuted their new track, "Better Way," which accompanies their name change. Also today: new music from John Spillane's Lapwing Nation, Eli West and Julie Fowlis, Sarah Jaroz, Rick Shea, Rod Picott, and Eve Ladin. And some great storytelling from Robin Williamson!

COVID-19 Community Report, April 27, 2021- Yolo Food Bank

Tue, 04/27/2021 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-Yolo-Food-Bank-logo.jpg

The concept of feeding people--of ensuring this most basic need of enough to eat---has played such a big role in the COVID-19 pandemic that it was an easy pick for me to center the last episode of this show on the Yolo Food Bank. With a mission to end hunger and food insecurity in Yolo County, joining me are the food bank’s Executive Director, Michael Bisch, and Robb Davis, who recently joined the organization as its first Impact and Innovation Officer. This was an interesting discussion with two local heroes, looking back on this year, and also ahead. Link to yolofoodbank.org for more information.

Davisville, April 26, 2021: North North Davis? No, it's Woodland

Mon, 04/26/2021 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Woodland near the Opera House 041521.JPG

You’ve probably heard people refer to southeast Woodland as north north Davis. Ever wonder how that comment plays in Woodland?

Today we talk with Jim Smith, who recently retired as editor of the Woodland Daily Democrat, about our neighbor to the north, how they view Davis, the growing overlap between the two communities, and things about Woodland you might not know (he cites its artists and restaurants).

We also talk about changes in local journalism during the 27 years he edited the paper, and where to find reliable news.
