Music from Celtic lands, as fall turns to winter

With the seasonal transition underway from autumn to winter, this week's session reflects the change. We'll listen in with the band Danú, Scotland's Dougie Maclean, mandolinist Marla Fibish, the folk arrangments of Salt House, our own local Golden Bough, fiddler Manus Maquire from the Copperplate Sessions, Kris Colt & the Black Rose band, Turlough, Ireland's Shane Hennessy, and Capid Draconis.

KDRT presents its first CD project, 'Holidays at the Hall'

KDRT is producing this limited edition CD/digital download as part of a  a thank you gift with donations of $75 or more.

Always a crowd favorite, the Davis Odd Fellows' annual Holiday Show for Thursday Live! each December typically features several diverse local bands, each preparing an imaginative short set of seasonal songs. KDRT's Jim Buchanan often features his live recordings of these shows in his December "Live Tracks" episodes.

This year, KDRT has selected a sampling of these well-loved performances for our first live music CD project as part of our Fall Fundraiser week. Sound Harvest Volume 1 -- Holidays at the Hall contains eight songs ranging from Celtic to Klezmer, jazz to folk.

The bands include Me & Him and The Muddy Waders as well as Misner & Smith, Calvin Handy and The Jazz Patrol, and the Davis Klezmer Orchestra. These were recorded 2011-2015, and recently mastered by Foxtail Sound.

We'll email you after your donation asking what format you'd prefer to receive. Don't delay, donate here today.

The Golden Road, Nov. 23, 2022: 50 years ago at the Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston

On Nov. 18, 1972, the Grateful Dead rolled in to Houston for a show at Hofheinz Pavilion. By all accounts it was a dynamic show, but only a good chunk of the second set was clearly captured by Owsley. It’s good stuff! Since this show included a superb "Dark Star," we’ll be dropping a classic "Dark Star" from 1969 to complete the program. This primo fall ‘72 performance will give you something to be thankful for.

The Folk Brothers for Nov. 23, 2022: Making connections

Rab Noakes (pictured here), the Scottish singer-songwriter who passed last week at 75, knew his way around Bob Dylan's canon. So does Brother Bill, who has been studiously reading Dylan's latest tome, as well as Grail Marcus' new book about The Bob. English fiddler Sam Sweeney -- who probably also knows a few Dylan songs -- has a new album, as do his proteges Owen Spafford and Louis Campbell. Confused? Stream the show.

A Return, Sounds from Middle Earth and Dark Brittanica

Also on the playlist is Florie Brown with Margie Butler and Pablo Carcamo, Lisa Lynn & Aryeh Frankfurter, Patrick Street, The House Devils, novemthree and Derek Fiechter.

Tune in live on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon at KDRT 95.7FM with replays Monday 8-9pm, Saturday 6-7pm. Outside the broadcast area you can stream at kdrt.org, or subscribe to the Celtic Songlines podcast on Apple podcasts.

Davisville, Nov. 21, 2022: The annual movie show with Davis critic Derrick Bang

Derrick Bang says he’s looking forward to seeing Steven Spielberg’s new movie, The Fabelmans, but hopes to pass on the modern-cannibals-in-love story, Bones and All. It’s time for our annual year-end movie talk with Derrick, and Davisville host Bill Buchanan begins by confessing he has seen only one movie in a theater this year. We also get Derrick’s take on some of 2022’s worst movies, some of its culturally significant ones, and how he keeps interested in movies after watching, reviewing and dissecting them since his days at the California Aggie in the 1970s.

The Golden Road, Nov. 16, 2022: Dick's Picks 44 & 40

Last week we heard most of the June 23, 1990 show at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore. This week we finish this outstanding show. Then we’ll move to a month later (7/19) at Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville, Ind., and finish with what we started on Oct. 5.

Join us. The Grateful Dead at their peak!
